Default Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs

I'm sure this has been brought up before but I figure it's Friday morning and I might as well rant just a bit. Anyone else getting really tired of companies including DVDs in Blu-ray packages? In 2017, with 4K UHDs beginning to take hold is it fair for companies to fleece consumers by charging a $100+ list price for an 8 Disc Box Set (4 of which are DVDs)? Let's be honest, if we are buying Blu-rays how many are using these DVDs at all? If this were the 1980s/90s this would be akin to record companies including an 8 Track with purchase of your CD, and charging you a premium price to own them both. I applaud the studios who separate the formats and keep their prices down. 10 years into the Blu-ray format, how is this still happening?

I am tired of it. I still think DVDs need to disappear completely except for kids/family titles and instructional/workout videos.

The initial idea was to future proof people who hadn't upgraded to blu-ray yet, so they buy the package with the DVD for now and the blu-ray for future use. I think at this point it's probably pointless and a waste of plastic but I will often sell the DVDs and digital copies to recoup some of my costs so it's not a huge deal for me particularly as there doesn't seem to be a difference in price between blu-ray only packages and the combo packs.

I forgot to add that on the bright side of things I do sell included DVDs quite a bit. I just sold the DVD out Hell or High Water for $6.35 after shipping was deducted.

I don't mind in the slightest, as I can re-gift the DVD copies to family and friends and save on Christmas and birthdays.

You just throw them in a sleeve and say Happy Birthday? Or do you print cover art for them and put it in a proper case?

The cost is the pretty much the same for titles that include Blu + DVD to those that just include the Blu.

I notice these Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs are regularly priced at around $39.99 SRP. 10 years after the introduction of the DVD (2009), you would NEVER see DVDs priced so outrageously. Blu-rays seem to be nearly resistant to falling prices. I can only afford to buy around the holidays when they're having 40% or higher discounts. I understand the costs to restore are expensive but surely those costs have come down somewhat over the years?

Are you nuts? Blu-ray prices have completely nose-dived in the past few years. Yeah, some smaller labels and bigger-name new releases are set at an MSRP at $39.95, but that's hardly the norm for the vast, vast majority of titles out on the format (most of which are in the $5-15 range now).

And who the hell pays full MSRP, anyway?

Considering how dirt cheap most catalog titles are on blu-ray now, I can't really justify complaining about the odd $20-25 title here or there that I want. Especially if you just have some patience, as pretty much every title drops significantly in price once it's been out for a while (again, not counting smaller, niche label stuff).

I made my statement after looking at the current Amazon deals. Yeah, I must be completely nuts, go ahead and show me all of these $5-$15 range Blus you speak of.

The combo packs make me more likely to buy it. Never a negative to have a backup if you ever need a DVD, I'm going to my Grandma's house for the weekend and she only has a DVD player.

If you're paying $39.95 for blu-rays then you're doing it wrong. I don't even pay that much for CRITERIONS! Disney releases are usually priced quite high but even if you wait for a few months most new releases drop dramatically in price.

Here is the first page of the Amazon deals calibrated to Lowest Prices First, lots of $5 blu-rays there:

While I do find it silly that they keep including DVDs with newer BDs I'm not really annoyed by it. What does annoy me though is the fact they're still making standalone DVDs. BD/DVD combo packs are supposed to be a transitional measure! Add a DVD to most new BDs> cut the standalone DVDs> eventually drop the DVD altogether> people will be more willing to buy a BD player because they already have a good amount of HD discs. That's theoretically what they're getting at, but ALL the studios are giant wimps and can never commit themselves to ditch the inferior format.

My point is, for the most part we are paying MORE for these combo packs than we would for a stand alone Blu-ray. I realize there are exceptions, but many times they are priced higher simply because of perceived value for including a DVD...a dying format. Sorry to your Grandma.

I don't see that much of a mark up. I get a lot of these releases for $20-$22 on release day, they also usually come with a digital copy as well (which are usually around $10-$15 themselves).

$10-15 for a DC? Where are you looking?

As I mentioned earlier, I usually only buy Blus over the holidays during 40-50% off sales. Like you probably, I can sometimes get Criterions for around $12. The list of $5 Blus you included made me chuckle so thanks for that. I'm sure I don't need to own a marathon of Seth Rogan and James Franco movies. Anyways, this is really outside of my initial posting which is why are companies still including DVDs with Blu-rays.

For new releases, not all releases. Also ITunes and VUDU.

Yeah, their prices are inflated. I laugh when I see $15-20 for an HDX VUDU title. You can find UV DC codes on this site for a few bucks.

Oh I know, but I don't buy digital. I only get them through my physical copy purchases.
