Lionsgate Circling Sequel To ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ With Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson In Talks

Lionsgate is circling U.S. rights to The Hitman’s Bodyguard sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. The distributor is likely to move on the pic we’re hearing but is waiting for confirmation on key cast. Lionsgate declined comment.

As one trade announced off the back of marketing materials in Cannes, the sequel is due to reunite the leading players from the first movie. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson are in early talks for the sequel, which the team is hoping could shoot as early as later this year.

Director Patrick Hughes is also expected to return on the pic which action specialist Millennium, who sold the original movie, will be gathering finance for this week on the Riviera. Plot details are being kept under wraps. Script comes from Tom O’Connor.

The 2017 action comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard grossed close to $80M domestic for Lionsgate and more than $180M worldwide. In the movie, Reynolds plays one of the world’s top bodyguards who gets a new client, a hit-man (Jackson) who must testify at the International Criminal Court. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time. Salma Hayek starred as the wife of Jackson’s character. Given the movie’s title, her participation in the sequel is also possible. All three actors have previously predicted a sequel.

it's the same director. I doubt he'll change his style.

My biggest gripe with the first movie was during the fantastic motorbike/ boat chase in Amsterdam, they had Reynolds stunt double do the entire chase with full motorbike helmet on. I couldn't believe they had the balls to do that and not even have a couple of bits during the chase where he flipped the visor up or something. Most movies would have done a combination of stunt and actor or a bit of head replacement.

I'm sure i'll check out the sequel as the first was good fun.

first movie was utterly terrible. How it had the 2 main actors it did, and still be that crap is amazing.

I wont be seeing this sequel.

The first dragged in the first half and picked up again and gave us what we expected towards the end. Hopefully they don't do that again. Wall to wall action and funny quips should do it.

Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek are officially returning for a “Hitman’s Bodyguard” sequel.

Lionsgate will release “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” in North America, the studio announced Thursday at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, Calif., where Millennium Media is handling sales. The original movie was released in late summer of 2017 and grossed $75.5 million stateside and more than $180 million globally.

In “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” Reynolds played the titular bodyguard hired to protect a notorious hitman, portrayed by Jackson. The film follows the mismatched duo on a journey from London to the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands in order for the hitman to testify against an Eastern European dictator, played by Gary Oldman. Hayek portrayed the imprisoned wife of Jackson’s hitman.

Patrick Hughes will take on directing duties again from a script by Brandon and Phillip Murphy. The sequel follows bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds) enlisted by Jackson and Hayek’s characters to join them on a mission along the Amalfi Coast. Production is expected to start in March.

Matt O’Toole and Les Weldon are producing for Millennium Media and Campbell Grobman Films. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, Jeffrey Greenstein and Jonathan Yunger of Millennium and Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell of Campbell Grobman are executive producing. Joe Drake, Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan from Lionsgate negotiated the domestic deal for the film with Lerner and Greenstein from Millennium.

Oscar winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) has signed on for The Hitman’s Bodyguard sequel from Lionsgate and Millennium Films. Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek are set to reprise their roles with Patrick Hughes is returning to direct from a screenplay by Tom O’Connor.

The latest installment, which is slated to begin filming this month, will follow Michael Bryce (Reynolds) who joins Darius (Jackson) and his wife Sonia (Hayek) on a mission along the Amalfi Coast.

The 2017 original grossed close to $80M domestic for Lionsgate and more than $180M worldwide.

Freeman was last seen on the big screen in Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and up next stars in the Lionsgate Olympus Has Fallen sequel Angel Has Fallen. He also serves as the host of National Geographic Channel’s The Story of God which follows Freeman as he travels to cities deemed the world’s holiest, and speak with religious leaders, scientists, historians, and archaeologists.

Antonio Banderas, Richard E. Grant Board Lionsgate’s ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ Sequel


Antonio Banderas has joined The Hitman’s Bodyguard sequel, with Oscar-nominated Can You Ever Forgive Me? star Richard E. Grant signing on to reprise his role in the Lionsgate/ Millennium Media follow-up to the hit 2017 comedy action-thriller. Production is currently underway on The Hitman, with stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek, as well as director Patrick Hughes, returning.

Morgan Freeman and Frank Grillo are also set to co-star in the film, which will shoot in London, Croatia and Italy.

Set on the Amalfi coast, the pic follows the mismatched, high-octane trio who are unwillingly pulled onto the side of the good guys as they battle to save Europe from a vengeful and powerful zealot with a dangerously over-developed sense of national pride.
