Caught this in the theater. Excellent film. A movie like this is driven by the strength of its dialogue, and thankfully it fully engages in a way that is riveting (and emotional).

I'd never seen the "n" word used in such a shocking way as in here. I'm not black, but I felt it like a punch. Regina King made a meaningful, empathetic film. It gets even better - more focused, its power concentrated - when the four leads bunker up in that hotel room. It doesn't feel like "filmed theater" at all.
Roger Ebert said it best when he reviewed The Color Purple: |

There's a trap already laid when a story centers around four very well known public figures on a fictional night at key moments for each of their legacies, wherein the premise will get you in the door but then fall flat because it's all external projections. Not only does this film (and presumably the original play) nimbly avoid this by presenting impeccably written, performed and directed characters, but it dismisses that concern quickly, and then it's scene after scene of engrossing interactions. The bounce between friendship, button pushing, tough love driven insults, and contrition never slips up. Finally a film from 2020 that I can say hit the high marks I've been searching for.

This is a movie MADE for the Best Cast award at the SAG Awards.
This was one of the best acted films I have seen. I'd say all 4 leads should be in the Oscar conversation, it would be tough to nominate 1 without the other 3, but that is what will pry happen. Screenplay nomination should be a lock, and I'd say Regina King could very well, deservedly, be nominated for her direction. Just a truly tremendous film |
