I was very happy for hours after reading this news. https://www.startrek.com/news/direct...fully-restored To me, this is the proper version of the movie. I have no used for the Theatrical cut frankly, I wont even watch it. I love this movie, and the music as well. The Kilngon theme is just fantastic. The sound use in this movie is among my all time favorite. I still have the DVD and have been waiting for this to be done for years. ![]() Discuss. The Wrath of Khan Director's Cut had a disc replacement program because of a repeated shot of Sulu. There are SO MANY details regarding the Director's Edition that would be easily missed. Having it released on a platform for people to pick at BEFORE a 4K UHD is released would be vital to ensuring that we get the proper version of the film on that disc. |

The original poster of this mentions stuff that may be on several minds as the huge release of the Complete Edition for big bucks is released - and honestly, why I decided not to pre-order this until blu-ray.com or thedigitalbits.com received a copy and reviewed it - and now one has. And now that it has been reviewed, the price hit the ceiling. Not one mention of problems with video or audio, although the extended TV version is 2.0 for audio if that's a problem with someone. In a way, for those living in apartments, it will be a version you can hear the dialogue without the music or special effects audio levels blowing you out of your living room and getting complaints from your neighbors that your sound system is too loud and disturbing the peace! Cross your fingers that the review is as it is and someone doesn't notice something that could have been missed (as these reviewing guys are human, too). |

I think I saw someone else link to some sort of disc protector to use in the Complete Adventure set to avoid scratching when removing the discs, but I keep a stock of good old paper sleeves and they seem to fit just fine so if you have some laying around, you could easily use these for protection.

Yeah, so this should probably go in the Wish List section since there's no release forthcoming.

That's sort of how Warner Bros. did the Zack Snyder's Justice League; it was made for HBO Max, but a physical media version is also available. I don't follow these things all that closely (I should, though), but I think the wait time for a physical release of ZSJL was brief. Wasn't it? Anyhoo...yes. Paramount is not going to announce a physical release of this much-awaited Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. You're on target about that! |

Still, it's nice to have a thread dedicated to the 'Director's Edition' in 4K since it will not be a part of the 4-Movie set coming out this September.

I just realized something after I talked about the 'Special Longer Version' in the 4-movie set.
...what if some of the footage used for the Director's Edition can't be presented in native 4K? TNG lost some footage and had to up convert it from SD. Could the footage from the SLV be lost as well? >.< Ooo, I hope not. |

If you want to hear about the restoration, Daren Dochterman who's working on the restoration talked about it a bit on Inglorious Treksperts a couple of weeks ago. Of course, he couldn't say much but I'm pretty sure we're getting a 4K disc because that's a lot of work wasted if it stays streaming due to bandwidth.

The SLV being a film print has some credence, as there have been stories that a different cut of the film screened on airlines. I think Stephen Collins mentions in the book RETURN TO TOMORROW hearing from a stranger on the street that a different cut with the 'we all create god in our own image' line was playing at a 2nd run house in NY.
I don't want to get into the thing about film elements again, because MM has stormed in a couple times in the last decade or two saying that they had all the assets for the DVD work, whereas I still think the stories I heard had credence, that Trumbull and Dykstra eventually tossed their original elements a couple years into the 80s when Paramount refused to claim them. That almost nothing from TMP has been repurposed -- except for some part of the vger transcendence that got used in TIN MAN and the simple copies of TMP footage in TWOK, which look severely degraded like dupes, not like recomposites -- seems crazy, given the wealth and quality of material. Shoot, Shatner could have just skip-printed the vger cloud and pulled a color layer out of it and had a fine center-of-the-galaxy for TFF for no money if the elements were still around, and Ralph Winter would certainly have known that and been lobbying for reasonable cost-cutting, especially given how the money got wasted in large part being thrown at Ferren when their post schedule was massively truncated by the mandated release date. |
