I have the Sony version on blu-ray, and it's a shame there are no extras with it. The DVD by Sony from years back didn't have any extras either. |

Olive must have licensed his through MGM whereas Sony has international. I'll gladly stick with the latter's Blu.

Tough to decide on either the Olive release or the Sony UK release (region free). The Sony release apparently has better picture quality (from what I've read; haven't confirmed), but the Olive release as a 2.0 DTS track versus the Sony's mono track.
Any thoughts? |

I have a copy of both discs and surprisingly, from the little time I spent comparing them, the Olive release looks to have utilized the same master as the UK Sony Blu. Both look very detailed and impressive, and appeared to share the same source elements/transfer.
Any fears this was going to be an older MGM master are unfounded (I plead guilty! lol). Audio is mono on both discs, btw -- the 2.0 here means dual channel mono, as the film wasn't recorded in stereo. |

Finally went with the UK Sony release based on very good reviews on the forum there and elsewhere. The only review I found otherwise was on the beaver comparison site and while the review was decent the screen captures (not always reliable I know) were not terribly impressive (unfortunately the reviewer didn't have access to the Olive release for direct comparison). And, frankly I just preferred the Sony cover. Anyway my copy is in and I've had a chance to look at it and it absolutely has a 'wow' factor. Colors are rich and vibrant and detail, even in the black and white newsreel clips, is remarkable. There's a whole wealth of background information available that was just not very noticeable on the old DVD, and foreground shots, from the old table radio and flower vase to the lush scenes on the upper Thames are a joy to watch.
Not attempting to promote the Sony release over the Olive, which I haven't seen and which may well be every bit as good, just suggesting that if someone is leaning toward the Sony version they probably can't go wrong. |

One of my favorites, screened Hope & Glory with my Dad when it was released back in the 80s. Remember the day like it was yesterday, somewhere in East Midtown, and we grabbed a few beers and burgers afterwards over at PJ Clarke's.
Own the MGM DVD, and can't comment on the comparison with the UK Sony disc, but the legs on Sammi Davis are as lovely as I remembered. ![]() |
