USA The Returned (Canal+)

The Returned Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

NEWS/TRAILER
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=12104

Quote:
Chicago-based independent U.S. distributors Music Box Films have acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the French supernatural mini-series Les Revenants a.k.a The Returned (2012) from Zodiak Rights. The distributors plan to have the show on DVD and Blu-ray in January 2014.

The Canal + eight-part series follows closely a group of people who arrive in a small mountain village to reclaim their homes but come to realize that they might have been dead for years.

The cast of The Returned includes Anne Consigny, Frédéric Pierrot, Clotilde Hesme, Jean-François Sivadier, Guillaume Gouix, and Céline Sallette.

The soundtrack for the series was created by Scottish ambient rockers Mogwai.

Following the announcement Music Box Films' William Schopf said: "The Returned epitomizes the very best of the crop of outstanding international television productions finding its way onto U.S. screens. We couldn't be more excited about working with Zodiak to introduce this extraordinary series to American audiences."

Very very eerie and odd. Great music.

Really enjoyed this when it aired on Channel 4 in the UK. It's really atmospheric and nice. Can't wait for series 2 next year...

It only came out on DVD in the UK, so it's nice to see it's getting a blu-ray release somewhere. Hopefully they won't have re-edited it or altered the subtitles too much.

probably better off watching this without adverts, if you can. the uk broadcast cut away just as the music comes in. mind you, music is used a lot. but that's okay - it's mogwai.

Question

HI,

Fantastic news that this is coming-out on Blu-Ray, but why is the USA getting a Blu-Ray release, when neither the UK, or even France - the show's own home nation - didn't get one?!

Buzz is correct. Although both France and the UK both had HD screenings on TV, both countries only had a DVD release. Hence, why many fans of the show complained to Canal Plus as to why they could watch it in HD, but could only purchase an SD version.

So, the fact that the USA and France are now getting an HD release, is definitely great news, it does seem odd, that this wasn't done in the first place, in the show's home country. Did Canal Plus think that people wouldn't want to own the same HD version they watched on TV? Was it not cost-effective for them to release the show in HD on Blu-Ray?

Universal in the UK certainly don't tend to release many TV shows onto Blu-Ray, so for UK fans, we kind of expected them not to release it in HD over here.

I'll certainly obtain the US version, but I hope it will contain properly translated subtitles, and not the hideously toned-down UK English Subtitles, that removed several instances of medium-to-strong bad language, and couldn't even correctly translate the show's name. (LES REVENANTS actually translates to THE UNDEAD, or THE LIVING DEAD, but was renamed to THE RETURNED so as not to cause "issues" with THE WALKING DEAD zombie horror TV show.)

I think that stems back to the BBC asking the translators of The Killing to tone down the amount of strong language. Apparently whoever was translating took many moderate terms and translated them as stronger language. After some complaints (probably from the Daily Mail or one it's readers) the BBC asked them to tone it down a bit. Perhaps the distributors (Zodiak Media), assuming BBC Four were their only chance of selling it, toned down the translation in advance.

I think The Returned is an international retitle rather than something Channel 4 did specifically for the UK, as C4 had some professional break bumpers with that title (and they normally just use a clip of opening titles or the 4 logo with the shows title next to it).

I just got this in the mail. The blu-ray is in dvd-sized packaging. I'm not going to be able to fit this on my shelf with the rest of my television series on blu. I guess I'll have to find a different home for it.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I'm in middle of rearranging my collection right now, so I may be able to make something work. BTW, everything about the packaging is really well done. It's just a bit too tall.

That's so odd. Is it plastic or cardboard (digipak) packaging?

It comes in a slipbox and is one of those tri-fold books (not sure what they're called exactly). I'll take some pictures for you.

Here you go...the first 2 pics are just comparing the size to a regular blu-ray.

Thanks for the pics (both of you)!

That is actually a really nice looking digipak. (I usually much prefer plastic cases). Shame about the size, though.
