Default 4K Player recomendation

I've decided to get a standalone 4K Player for my LG CX OLED to get the most out of my 4K discs because my Xbox One X doesn't support Dolby Vision and the Series X as well as the PS5 most likely won't either from what I was reading.

So today I went to the local Best Buy to grab the Panasonic DP-UB420-K model because I could have sworn the reviews I read said it had Dolby Vision support but after taking it home setting it up and testing out a disc I only got HDR10 then after looking at it some more it does indeed only support HDR10 and HDR10+, so back its going.

What would you guys recommend I get? My only requirements are that the player support Dolby Vision, has good upscaling on DVD and BD and finally be fairly well priced I don't want to spend more than $300 on it.

Sony - UBP-X800M2, it just has DV playback as a on/off instead of being automatic which is dumb but runs $250, compared to a Panasonic UB 820 which is $500. Both are what most buy.

Another vote for the Sony UBP-X800M2. Has performed flawlessly so far.

Managed to get the X800M2 today and pretty happy with it so far. One question though is there a way to leave Dolby Vision turned on but only have it enabled when a disc that supports Dolby Vision is being played?

Tonight when testing a 4K BD as well as a standard BD. Dolby Vision came on when the standard BD was being played.

Just grabbed the Sony x800m2 with the 20% best buy rewards coupon. $250, but I'll get $50 back in rewards. Matching this with my Sony A8H

You have to manually turn it off and on, the only downside of this player

I did some more research after posting this and found that out. Kind of annoying. I hope Sony issues a firmware to fix it so it'll auto turn on.

On a side note if I play a 4K movie that doesn't support Dolby Vision with it turned on will that mess the picture up? For example make it to bright or looked washed out?

Yeah, a bit. It will mess with the HDR. Just keep it off unless you want to turn it on for a dolby vision disk.

Well thanks for the information. I guess I'm just going to return it and do some more research.

Next best option is $500, I would just keep it. It's the best player besides the Panasonic ub-820 ($500) and it's half the price

The player model I recommend for your situation is the Panasonic DP-UB820. It can play Dolby Vision discs and if LG somehow decides to update their displays with HDR10+, you will be able to play those discs as well. It even has a feature called “HDR Optimizer” that allows you to boost the quality of discs encoded in the basic HDR10. You can often find great deals on it.

I have had and been using the LG UBK90 4K player. It has been a superb performer and automatically turns dolby vision on or off based on the title being played. I can almost always find it priced under $200 if I shop around.
