The Others (Remake)

In a competitive situation, LA-based Sentient Entertainment has won the remake rights to Nicole Kidman horror movie hit The Others, which scared up north of $200M global when it was released in 2001.

Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Alejandro Amenabar’s timely self-isolation tale about a war widow who hides her children away in an isolated mansion due to a rare disease characterized by photosensitivity. The arrival of three mysterious servants unlocks the house’s terrifying secrets. Kidman was Golden Globe and BAFTA-nominated for her turn and writer-director Amenabar won Goyas for Best Director and Screenplay.

The plan is to reinvent and modernize the story and we understand the project is already attracting significant interest from A-list talent and studio backers. The film will be produced by Sentient’s Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin, as well as Aliwen Entertainment’s Lucas Akoskin. (Source)

I thought it was superior to The Sixth Sense, but it probably got less attention/praise precisely because both movies are about

I have nothing against remakes in general, but this sure as hell looks to be utterly superfluous...and good luck getting an actress who can rival Nicole Kidman's tightly-wound and intense triumph of a performance.

Will likely be as succesful as THE TURNING was recently in modernising THE INNOCENTS...

There are plenty of original movies being talked about and produced.

The movie aged well, though. It looks no different from movies today. Nicole Kidman is still kinda a well known actor. Just stream up and leave it at that.

Hate the idea. However, it’s a good sign for a potential remastered BD or 4K release of the original. And that’s a big welcome.

As a film lover, I've always felt that the greatest sin Hollywood commits is found in the poor execution of a great story. There are literally countless examples of this.

THE OTHERS is not one of these. In fact, it's quite the opposite. It is an example of a pretty thin story fleshed out well in it's runtime.

Why can't they go back and revisit a poorly executed flop?

They want the brand recognition of a past hit. They don't remake these movies because they love the stories.

I remember seeing a sneak preview of this and the 'reveal' at the end - made everyone, and I mean, everyone just scream, jump a foot - one of the best movie going memories - there is no need for a remake of this - none.

That's different. The original Invisible Man was done in the 30s. The Others was done just 20 years ago. Yeah, 20 years ago sounds like a long time, but I remember this being in theaters, I remember the ads. This movie is supposedly targeting my generation, so who are they appealing to? They should only remake films that didn't quite work the first time around, for whatever the reason. You know, good scripts but a poor execution. There's no reason to remake this one, really.
