Mary and the Witch’s Flower (Studio Ponoc, 2017) - Blu-ray Forum

Studio Ghilbi fan? Good news! Some Ghibli veterans started Studio Ponoc to focus on full length animated movies again. Remember that name, it might be the Ghibli of the future.

Their first feature is Mary and the Witch's Flower, based on the Brittish childrens book The Little Broomstick, by Mary Stewart. Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who was the head of Arrietty and When Marnie was There. He wrote the script with the help of Riko Sakaguchi, who wrote The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

The book tells the story of a girl that follows her cat into the woods. Next, she finds a strange flower and a broomstick that's able to fly. Before she realises it, she's transported to prestigious school for witches. When she discovers terrible things are happening there, a great adventure begins ...

The film will in Japanese theatres this summer. No other release dates known at this point.

This looks amazing. Hopefully Gkids gets it for the US. I hope it gets a limited release this fall/winter here in the states for Oscar season and then a Blu-ray release early next year

The shades of Kiki's Delivery Service (my favorite Ghibli film) are apparent. It looks like they haven't missed a beat since migrating to the new studio. Can't wait to see this.

Kate Winslet Leads Voice Cast for Anime 'Mary and the Witch's Flower'

Based on The Little Broomstick by British children's author Mary Stewart, the anime follows the adventures of a girl in a school of magic. The English screenplay adaptation was written by David Freedman and Lynda Freedman.

Altitude Film is handling U.K. and worldwide sales, with GKIDS distributing in North America and Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.
