Default Watching my 1st 4K movie TONIGHT !

So my LG UP870 arrived on Friday and today i have "Alien Covenant" & "Allied" (i have previously owned both on Blu Ray) coming in as well.

I realize i am late to the party but i am excited to check out this new medium.

Any tips & suggestions ?

Just turn down the lights, relax, and enjoy Alien Covenant! It's a top tier disc, for sure.

[Show spoiler]Also, I'll just leave this here for future reference: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=274160

Allied looks really really good. Whatever you do, don't use the same picture settings for the 4K discs as you do for BluRay. Tweak it differently. Use a different pre-set and play with the parameters from that point.

Don't overthink it. Some of these folks seem way too overinvolved setting up there tv. It makes me wonder when they find time to just enjoy the movie.
The presets work just fine. I'm sure you will be impressed.
My first 4K was the Revinent. I did no picture set up before this, just had selected the Cinima setting. It blew me away!!!

My first one on UHD was The Revenant.

Amazing quality.

Settings DO matter. That's probably why people come into virtually every thread complaining about picture quality, because they use presets or don't know how to set up their system properly.

Spelling matters, too.

Sweet! After being in a few months I still get an excitement over popping in a sweet disc on 4k. Alien covenant is certainly one of those. Don't be afraid to turn to the volume a little..

Alien Covenant looks great, the sound is nothing like it was in the theater.

Alien Covenant was my first 4K disc as well, but I will say that at least in my experience, it took a few weeks for my TV to settle into the best-looking picture (as well as finding the right adjustments for the room, etc). So I wasn't completely impressed at first, not am now.

I've only seen the menus on a few 4K TVs but by default I'm guessing your TV will automatically use a different preset for 4K content than it does for regular HD. If you are really worried about it you will probably be able to find some general calibration tips online for the make and model of your TV. But I think the general rule of thumb is that if YOU are happy with the PQ, don't mess with it too much.

If you're old-ish like me try a catalog title you haven't seen on blu-ray. Every catalog title I've seen - and I own all dozen or so that are pre-1990 - looks like a completely new film.

The three 1990s' films I own - Unforgiven, A Few Good Men, and Groundhog Day - all look great, too.

Agreed!!! When the studio takes an old movie and rescans the negative in 4k or 8K, processes it with HDR10 or Dolby Vision and bumps that old Dolby Digital soundtrack up to Dolby Atmos or DTS-X, it's like you are watching a totally new movie for the first time. The original Blade Runner from 1982 is a perfect example of this. You will see details in that movie that you have never seen before.

Definitely go with a title you’ve seen on multiple formats.

Happy to say I just purchased my first 4k a few weeks ago, it was Blade Runner 82 and now I have picked up a habit of going straight to the 4k deals at BB & Amazon. Something tells me physical media is on its last leg with companies like Oppo leaving the game so grab as many 4k's as you can afford.
