Default Lu over the Wall (Masaaki Yuasa, 2017)

Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta (Lu Over the Wall), a new animated movie by director Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Kick Heart, Ping Pong), who wrote the scrip with Reiko Yoshida (The Cat Returns). Art director of this project is Hiroshi Ohno (Wolf Children), character design by Yoko Nemu and Nobutake Ito (Kaiba).

Science SARU (Yuasa's studio) released a teaser and the making of the poster ... The story centers on Kai, a gloomy middle school student whose life changes after meeting Lu, a mermaid. It reminds me of Ponyo.

I'm so excited for this one! I can't believe Yuasa is releasing TWO features in the span of under two months! Especially considering he's only had one feature so far, and that was back in 2004.

This looks a little Ponyo-esque, but it sure looks to have his trademark wacky animation. Really looking forward to it.

Really looking forward to Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (I don't think it has an English title yet) as well. It's definitely a spiritual successor to Tatami Galaxy , since it virtually has all of the same people working on it.

Saw it at the Shanghai International Film Festival, Masaaki Yuasa came after the screening. I was a little disappointed by this, it was more a mediocre work from Reiko Yoshida rather than a crazy imagination feast from Masaaki Yuasa. It's decent but The Night is Short, Walk on Girl is the typical Yuasa work and way better than this one. But the animation is still awesome, especially the animation in this film was finished by flash, it really gave the film a brand new feeling unlike other animes.

A major animation festival is coming to Los Angeles for the first time in many years. The inaugural edition of Animation Is Film is set to to take place October 20-22 at the TCL Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood. Besides screenings, the festival will also include red carpet premieres, filmmaker Q&As, receptions, both juried and audience awards, and other special events.

This will be the Lu over the Wall premiere for North America.

I started not liking the art direction of the movie, specifically the character design, facial expressions and movements. It looks like it's animated by a team of eighth graders. As the movie progressed and really came out as being fantastical and whimsical, I started being more okay with the style going with the story. Ultimately it's an interesting mess of a movie that works best if you just go along with it.

It's kind of like Ponyo x Urusei Yatsura x Mermaid's Scar. I gave it 7/10
