Instant purchase if David M / Fidelity in Motion handled the encoding, which is likely. He probably delivers the definitive UHD encode of this masterpiece after Curzon (blocky highlights and blacks) and Criterion (low-pass filtering and some blockiness) haven’t quite gotten there!
Also, hopefully, Carlotta releases BD editions of the many Wenders restorations. After the Curzon debacle of their career retrospective set (as covered here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=362757), most of these films are in dire need of adequate presentations in HD. |

I saw the outer box art the other day, and wondered if it was finalized. Is it really just a generic slipcase with no artwork? Carlotta's Digibooks usually have quite nice outer slipcases, so I'm hoping it'll be updated with something.

Just received mine (Collector’s Edition) directly from Carlotta.
The first nice surprise was that the size of the UHD was "upgraded" from a BD-66 to a BD-100. Their shop mentioned a BD-66 for a while, maybe it was a mistake but nonetheless a great suprise. The other surprise is that David M / FiM did NOT handle the encoding on this one but LSP Medien in Germany according to the credit screen. (David did the included BD). This is not a bad thing as the encoding is excellent. This is the best UHD version of Wings of Desire. Of course, I haven’t seen the disc in its entirety but the spots that annoyed me on the Curzon (virtually all highlights and some mushy blacks) resolve much better on the Carlotta with a small layer of grain visible in motion and while pausing. Other than that, the UHD master looks immaculate. Phenomenal detail and small, tight grain as on the Curzon in "normal" moments. Sound is German 5.1 and 2.0 (and a French dub) as hinted at, the video master is obviously SDR. An easy recommendation if you understand the languages in the film or can add external subtitles. P.S. Carlotta also released a BD of the 4K-restored The American Friend today. It’s equally the best version of that film. It’s my third BD after the Criterion and Studiocanal versions. This is a FiM encode and obviously looks & sounds superb. Last edited by nicwood; 10-14-2023 at 11:42 AM. |

![]() I would report this to their customer service but honestly Ive just had a very disappointing experience with them. The pre-orders of the October titles were sold with a shipping date of September 29 if I remember correctly. I wouldnt bother because of a few days but theyve missed that target by 10 days. I sent them a friendly email asking them to clarify when the pre-orders start shipping and why they mentioned the above day if they cant honor it. I never ordered with them directly and hoped for an answer but instead got nothing back. Extremely disappointing. |

BTW, today was a -50% off sale of almost the entire Carlotta repertory. They only allowed French customers to participate though. Every attempt at getting my German address to work failed. I wrote that this was hopefully a one-off and other sales are opened up for all customers as it should be. |

So far, they haven't answered my email. Again, I should say. This is remarkably disappointing for a label that puts out such great editions.

The 4K master is a real stunner, and the compression is superb. Other than the localised credits (I'm not sure how they were handled on other releases, but the Criterion BD master streaming on [HBO] Max has them in English, so it's possible they were localised for different territories), there's really nothing to complain about here. (btw, the standard edition is in a slimmer sized American UHD case, rather than the thicker European one I was expecting) |

Regarding the localized titles: This is certainly a bit odd as Carlotta normally doesn't do these kinds of things (thank God) as both the CC and Curzon UHDs have them in English. The German BD should have them in German if I remember correctly. The original titles are always preferable but I assume Wenders is fine with it or even suggested it due to the three languages in the film. |
