Default Apple TV 4k Video Freezing Temporarily

I own an Apple TV 4k 32GB and once in a while the video will freeze up for about 3 seconds but the audio will continue. This happened on two movies streamed through iTunes Movies so far, about 2 minutes from the end of the movie. It's not the movie either since I replayed where the video froze up for a few seconds and it did not happen again. This only happened when streaming through the iTunes Movies app. Anyone else had their Apple TV 4k's video freeze up for 3 seconds while the audio still continued fine?

I haven’t had that happen yet. I’ll chime back in if it does. Make sure the software is up-to-date, and maybe restart it from time to time.

I did restart it about a week ago. I'm going to see if disabling Quick Start and turning off application and software auto update fixes the issue. When I had the Apple TV (4th Gen) I had Quick Start turned off most of the time and never experienced that issue on the 4th Gen.

Does turning Quick Start "off" disable 4K playback still, or do you still need Quick Start "on" for 4K to play?

I have it set to "on" as last I heard, it needed to be.

Turning off Quick Start disables 4k playback for iTunes purchases. I don't have a 4k TV but in the description while playing a 4k title it will say HD if Quick Start is disabled but it will say 4k if Quick Start is enabled. If disabling Quick Start is a workaround to those 3-second video freezes I'v experienced once in a while while streaming through iTunes Movies I don't find as an acceptable solution in the long term as I will be getting a 4k TV soon, unless in a future software update Apple decides to get 4k streaming to work with Quick Start disabled, or maybe something is just wrong with my Apple TV 4k.

I wish they’d fix the Quick Start feature! I don’t mind waiting those extra couple of seconds to get the best quality from the start.

I noticed that Netflix stuttered the video for about half a second twice already. During both those times the stutter in the video happened about 1 minute before the end of a Star Trek season 1 episode 1 and about 1 minute before then end of Curious George A Very Monkey Christmas. I replayed those parts again and it did not stutter again. It's like the video does a quick freeze then skips a few frames to catch up with the audio but the audio continues to plays normal. Is something most likely going on in the background in Netflix during those stutters? Also I was watching Small Town Santa through Netflix and in the beginning of the movie where it shows a toy train set with the train moving on the track, it did what seemed like a 1/16 second stutter in the video. When I replayed that part after watching the movie the stutter at that particular spot did not happen again. There is no Quick Start setting for Netflix in the Apple TV's setup menu, so I'm stuck with only one streaming method Apple uses for Netflix. This is similar to those stutters I encountered near the end of 2 movies I watched through iTunes when I had Quick Start enabled and one stutter lasted for about a second then skipped frames to sync up with the audio. I've never experienced something like this on my Apple TV (4th Gen) which I sold but then again only shortly before buying the Apple TV 4k I started using the Quick Start feature. I have disabled auto updates for applications and the system software but that does not seem to fix the issue. I'm not sure if my Apple TV 4k is defective. My first one that I returned had a HDMI port that would not keep my HDMI cable securely connected. Now I don't know if I should return this one as well and make another exchange.

This issue can happen when the tv's motion processing (true cinema, cinemotion) is turned off. If you have the Apple tv 4k set to 4k/24p or 1080/24p, you must have your tv's motion processoring turned on.

My TV is in Graphics mode with all enhancements turned off including Cinemotion. I use Graphics mode because it prevents my screen's LEDs from completely turning off after 1 second when there is nothing on the screen, such as the blank screen you get in some movies in between some scene changes. This frame skipping issue happened before the 11.2 TVOS update on my Apple TV 4k, so it has nothing to do with having Match refresh rate with frame rate option turned on which was not available before the 11.2 update.

Actually my TV does support 24Hz. When I connected my TV to my PC, I see a 23 and 24 Hz option in the resolution display settings. Then again this issue happened in TVOS 11.1 as well, at least with iTunes movies.

I had an issue with Poison Ivy 3 locking up my new 64G Apple TV 46 if you try to use the chapters or fast forward feature.

Can anyone try to recreate it to see if it's a corrupt file on Apple's servers or just something wrong with my Apple TV?

The Apple TV4K has issues with ET (4K) that makes the ATV4K remote and remote app not responding to any commands. The Bourne Legacy (4K) has issues with chapter selection. Several 4K HDR/DV movies have issues with black levels being too high. A lot of 4k dv movies look like it has a grayish color to it when the ATV4K applies it DV to HDR10 conversion on HDR10 TV sets. Some 4K movies look worse than HD movies. At this point I think that Apple does not care about the 4k quality in movies. Even a Blu-ray movie looks better than a 4K movie on iTunes.

Yes! - this is the same issue I have - unresponsive remote to any commands...black screen with audio continuing if you try to force close.

At this point I'm thinking about switching to a Nvidia Shield TV and returning my Apple TV 4k for a refund. I did a system reset about a week ago because I experienced a reboot issue while streaming a movie from iTunes and that maybe fixed that issue but the 11.2 TVOS update did not fix occasional video hiccup issue that happens about 1 minute before a movie ends on my Apple TV 4k. The 16GB Nvidia Shield TV is on sale right now at Best Buy for $149.99.

Did you actually do a system reset on system settings only or a complete system reset with a reinstall of TVOS 11.2?

I bought the latest Nvidia shield tv about 4 months ago and I returned it after using it for a few days due to 24p frame skipping issues with Vudu, Netflix and Plex.

You're better going back to physical media. You'll won't deal with these issues with video streaming.

I chose the option to do a factory reset without updating the software to the latest OS as I already had the latest OS. It did reset all my settings and deleted the 3rd party apps that I downloaded and just kept the basic Apple apps. I was also considering rebuying a Roku Ultra since it has automatic refresh rate switching now but does it still have the audio chirping issue in Netflix and Vudu and volume wavering in Netflix as that's why I'm still hesitating on rebuying a Roku Ultra?

Was running into the freezing issues with ET.

I noticed that if I played through the TV app, ET would freeze up the remote, but If I played through iTunes Movies App, it seemed to work fine.

Thats the problem; you did not do the ATV4k system restore correctly. Just do the restore with the update TVOS option. It wipes out TVOS 11.2, reinstalls it, restores the system settings back to default, and also automatically reinstalls the apps you've downloaded on the ATV4k.

Yes, the Roku Ultra still has the audio chirping sound.

If I do return my Apple TV 4k for a refund and buy a non-Apple streaming device that means that I wasted my money on iTunes purchases. Most of my iTunes purchases are also in Vudu because of MA but still those that didn't port over I consider money wasted if I end up buying a non-Apple streaming device.

A few hours ago I did the system factory reset with download latest operating system option. If I still get the video hiccup issue that happens near the end of a movie and tv show or a reboot during streaming I'm just going to exchange it for another Apple TV 4k, unless it's a software issue.
