Arrow may end up releasing this. They seem keen on releasing all Mario bava on blu. For that reason I'll hold off a while.

Tim Lucas did an audio commentary and talks about the pq on his blog (17 Sep):
"Speaking of audio commentaries, I've recorded three in the part month, but the two I can tell you about are Sergio Leone's FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) for Kino Lorber and Mario Bava's Vampire gegen Herakles (1961) - which you may know better as HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD - for the German company Koch Media. I have not yet seen Kino's master for the Leone masterpiece, but Koch Media's master for the Technicolor HERCULES film redefines "eye-popping." I've seen the film in 35mm and it was an unforgettable experience; the master retains the hot colors and ramps up the razor focus - this should be your newest demonstration disc. At this time, I am not aware of any forthcoming US or UK release of this title, and I can assure you that it will be English friendly. It will be streeting on October 25 and can be pre-ordered here: https://www.amazon.de/Vampire-gegen-Herakles-Bava-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B07GJ51MWT/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537213429&sr=8-1&keywords=vampire+gegen+herakles." http://www.videowatchdog.com/home/home.html |

I had forgotten about this after the initial announcement stating no English options, until a friend on FB posted some photos of the fantastic packaging stating that this is "the most beautiful looking Blu-ray release I've ever seen in terms of presentation" That coupled with Babybreese acknowledgement of an extra 4 mins make this a must have for me. £25 delivered from Amazon! Any Bava fans on the fence about this should probably take the plunge...

Opening pre credit is the lone new bit of footage here that I caught.
Lots of heads and tails of scenes clipped on the DVD. Old DVD was a real mess, although it never looked so bad until now. Cropped on all 4 sides, zoomed in bug time. You can pick any random frame to examine, the difference jumps out everywhere. For example ![]() ![]() |

German Site, but the Runtimes and Pictures are a good hint:
https://www.schnittberichte.com/schn....php?ID=806889 i can assure the cuts of the US DVD are exactly the same (most likely identical Masters used back then). |

I’ve loved this movie over the years when I have caught it on late night television, though it always appeared to be 6 generations down from a 30 year old beta master. But, I’ve always been weary of buying into Bava’s filmography due to all the manipulations of his work. But, this release seems to be a possible “definitive” version, uncut/uncensored the way it should be?! This would be a one-time purchase for me. Can the Bava experts chime in with some knowledgeable opinions? My knowledge on this subject are zilch.

For the film itself, it's very good.
There is an OCN somewhere which could yield an even more impressive image, but a scan of that may never happen. Another release could have more special features, Region A, less expensive ect but until a superior source turns up, this is likely it for the film itself. |
