I need to see it again since it's been a long time, but I remember watching The Ninth Gate when it first came out on DVD and absolutely loving it until the abrupt, confusing ending that left me like "Uh . . . what?"

I haven't seen this film, but I heard about the infamous awful abrupt ending, from The Devil Inside, where you have to go to a now dead website, for the conclusion.
HOLY ****, how did the filmmakers allow it?! |

An American Werewolf in London. Good movie, but the ending needs work.

No no no. The Fly is one of my favorite films, and while I can see why you would compare the ending to that of An American Werewolf in London, it is totally different in context and execution. The Fly did it a lot better. Plus, the fact that the female lead had to pull the trigger helped elevate it on an emotional level that resonates through the viewer as the credits roll. The Neon Demon spurs into my mind quickly, it really feels like there's something missing but perhaps its too artsy fartsy for me, as if I don't get it. Oh I get it but it sincerely feels unfinished.

Jaws
People are going to disagree with me obviously because it’s a classic but I find the ending rushes so fast when the credits come up I’m always like “already?” Massive buildup for 2 hours and the end sequence rushes by in what feels like ten minutes. |

What about John Carpenter's Halloween and Carpenter's The Thing?
Myers get's up and walks away vanishing into the Halloween night, credits roll and no real closure. McReady & Childs at the end freezing to death sharing a bottle of booze, or was it really gasoline? Credits roll and you are left to wonder what would become of them or if one was The Thing. |
