Default Subwoofer disconnect: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation R2 Blu-ray

Hello all

In all honesty I'm not entirely sure where to post this topic, and to me this seemed the most plausible area, but by all means move it if you feel that it's better suited elsewhere.

My problem is that I recently purchased a new (sealed) UK blu-ray copy of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and having played it on my new Atmos /DTS:X setup, which consists of a Denon AVRX2500H receiver and an Onkyo SKSHT588 speaker package, both of which have been working perfectly since I installed them, there has been a fault with the LFE.

The issue is that during the underwater scene, round about when Tom Cruise is about to jump into the huge whirling turbine, the subwoofer clicks and the bass disappears and then returns, and this happens twice in quick succession.

At first I thought it was the disc, and so the seller sent me another (sealed) brand new replacement, however the same thing has happened, which is leaving me perplexed as to what it could be.

I have also emailed Onkyo to describe the problem, and am yet to hear anything back, and I've not seen any threads here regards faulty discs, so I was wondering if there was anybody here that might help shed some light on what the most likely answer is?

I will also add that I've been playing some very loud movies and has no issues whatsoever, so I don't suspect it's an audio level issue, however I have never had a blu-ray with problematic audio since upgrading from DVD, while I also lowered the subwoofer level and its still happening.

Anyway, I will leave this as is, and if anybody needs any additional information, just ask and I will do my best to help.

Regards
Neil.

That is certainly a great scene and one I use as a demo frequently.

Since the issue still exists when you lower the volume, it seems as if there is something in the signal path that the sub is responding to. The first place I would look (and usually the easiest to try) is the sub cable. If it is convenient, I would buy a different cable and see if that remedies the situation. If it still exists with the new cable, I would look at the sub next. I don’t believe it has anything to do with the disc.

Chasing gremlins can be frustrating so happy hunting!

Hi and thanks for the suggestion, luckily I found another, much better quality subwoofer cable that I hadn't used, and yet sadly the problem still exists.

Damn. I was hoping it was the easy solution. What is model number for your sub? Also, how do you have it hooked up?

The SW itself is part of an Onkyo SKS-HT588 speaker package, and I have it connected to a Denon receiver via a standard (and now recently improved) SW cable.

I've been in contact with Onkyo customer services, who are now looking into it, plus I've supplied them with a video recording of the clip in question, and you can see that the power appears to switch on and off, based upon the blue light doing the same.

Their initial opinion was that the SW was perhaps unable to cope with the frequency levels, however after reducing the AV receiver SW levels to the lowest possible point, the glitch still occurs.

I've also emailed Paramount with the same information (and clip) and I'm equally curious to know their position, especially given that Onkyo now suspect that the disc is most likely the culprit, although I'm yet to hear their feedback based upon the submitted video clip.

The plot thickens...

It is great that you sent video to both. I have a feeling they might blame each other on this one. Keep us in the loop!

Have you checked to see if there is a firmware update for your receiver. It is possible the initial code in the receiver has a slight issue and may need a software patch.

Just wondering if this occurs with the subwoofer turned off or sub woofer cable disconnected.

Carried out an update, checked the disc, and the problem is still there.

What level is your receiver using with the subwoofer/LFE output? Can you try adjusting the level down a little bit? Wondering if the peak level during this scene is causing the sub amp to go into auto protect mode.

Sadly I've already tried that, even lowering the receiver SW feed to its lowest level, and yet the problem continued.
