Default Do you buy 4K Ultra HD or regular blu ray's?

Since 4K Ultra HD has been out for a while do most people buy 4K or regular blu ray's. I just buy regular blu ray's and don't think I will even be buying a 4K tv or at least not in the foreseeable future. I think blu ray looks great and would not want to spend the extra money on 4K Ultra Hd discs. I have been very happy with my blu ray collection and not sure how much better 4K would be since some of my blu's look great already.

4K all the way for me unless:

-It's a 3D movie (then it will be both UHD + 3D Blu-ray)

-It's a movie that will not be released (any time soon) on UHD (I most recently bought Ouija: Origin Of Evil for example)

-It's a release by the likes of Scream, Arrow or Synapse

I do not own a 4K set up yet, but I'm currently purchasing 4K UHD titles, in an attempt to future-proof my collection. For an average variance of about $5 a title, it really is a no-brainer to just invest in purchasing the 4K version for now, especially since it comes with a standard Blu-ray disc. I see no sense in continuing to buy just the Blu-ray, when I'd be re-buying the very same titles, in a few years, and at a higher overall cost.

I recently upgraded my receiver to handle 4K pass-through, and a 4K TV is next on the horizon; So, this practice is very practical for me. However, not everyone is convinced that the difference in quality is worth it; and at the end of the day, every dollar spent is at the individual's discretion. I have seen a full 4K set-up, beside a standard 1080p display, and I personally feel that the upgrade is worth it. My point: I love that the moment I plug in the final component, of my future 4K equipment, I will have a library of 4K content to fire-up.

New movies: default to 4K if available.

Existing movies: take what I can get.

It's great that you have a 3D tv that is my one regret, not having a 3D tv. Now it seems as if they have stopped making them.

I see your point about future proofing your collection for when you buy a 4K tv. Forgot that 4K titles come with a standard blu ray.

I usually read a review first before dropping the extra 5 bucks since some of them are barely an upgrade like Lego Batman.

Haven't bought a single UHD yet, and most of the films I'm buying now aren't on UHD and probably never will be (just bought Bad Day and Black Rock and They Live By Night, for instance). I've reserved a few blu-ray purchases of newer releases because I'll probably buy the UHD in the future.

There's a number of UHD's I have on my wishlist. I'm guessing there will be deals on black friday and that will get me started. I haven't been too keen to buy much of anything yet because I generally don't spend $20 or $30 for new-release studio movies whether it's DVD, blu-ray or UHD, and certainly not to upgrade something I already have. But as the sales are getting closer to $10, it seems inevitable I will start buying at least a few.

I depends on two things, first and foremost, if it's the only way to get ATMOS/DTS:X audio i'll go UHD over HD.

if both offer ATMOS/DTS:X, i'll go HD unless it's a special, big budget, critically acclaimed for it's HDR/DV video i'll go UHD because despite the fact that I don't currently own a 4K tv, I will at some point upgrade to one and will want to already have those highly video rated UHD movies on hand and not have to rebuy them.

I use a UHD player to get those new audio codecs and the display on my 1080p tv looks great

This is exactly what I do, as well. I've upgraded my BD player to an Oppo 203 for 4K playback but the OLED tvs have to come down in price before I can complete the puzzle. I also want to upgrade from a 55" LED to a 65" LG OLED at the same time, and I'm not spending $3,500-$4,500 when I expect prices to be closer to $2,500 in a few years.

I've been really pleased to see the 4K titles, at least the ones that I've been interested in, have dropped to $15 at some point, which is a pretty easy choice considering the future proofing and inclusion of the standard BD.

I just watched my Deadpool UHD disc last night and it still looked amazing on my TV.

Definitely 4K even though I'm not impressed with the Panasonic 700. I'm saving for the Oppo. To me there's no point in getting the Bluray only disc for the sake of a fivers difference. Might aswell be future proof.

I'm still sticking with Blu-ray for the time being. I don't have a 4K TV nor do I have a UHD Blu-ray player. Being in school, there's no telling how long it'll be until I can upgrade. When I do, I'm only upgrading blockbuster titles to 4K such as John Wick and Mad Max: Fury Road. Absolutely not upgrading my entire collection again.

If you're going to wait a while, wait and see if the Sony X800 player gets DV support. If it does, it's absolutely going to be the best bang for the buck. It already is, but since you're mentioning the future proof aspect, figured you want a player that support DV.

Anyway, my purchasing habits:

I've replaced some movies in 4K, for sure. Stuff that I either really enjoyed, or believe would look great in 4K. I've picked up The Shallows, Ghostbusters, The Mummy, Pacific Rim, The Revenant, just to name a few. And I'll continue to replace films I really enjoyed.

There's other films I've enjoyed that I know I won't match many times again, though, so I've steered clear from an upgrade. The Hunger Games films come to mind.

Every release I buy from here on out will be 4K unless there's no 4K available. I've picked up titles like Rogue One and Get Out on Blu-ray, for example.

So I'm not opposed to Blu-ray just because 4K is out, but I am somewhat disappointed when films like The Force Awakens isn't out on the new format yet.

Like we said in the early days of personal computers...it's all about the software. You choose a computer based on the software you use.

I'm a buyer of classic catalogue and genre catalogue movies.

I'm essentially disqualified from buying 4K titles. They offer virtually nothing for buyers like me.

The Blu-ray Discs I currently have on pre-order are Man From Planet X, The Bat People, Scorchy and Night of the Sorcerers/The Loreley's Grasp. The most recent BDs I've received are Boy on a Dolphin, The Hindenburg, Highway to Hell, Caltiki the Immortal Monster and the Dracula and Mummy Legacy collections.

At this point in life of physical media in general and 4K in particular, there is no realistic prospect of significant catalogue content appearing on 4K...so I'm out.
