Default List of ten of the best Three Stooges films featuring Curly

Hello all,

I recently was watching The Best of The Three Stooges DVD set from Time Life, which gave me the idea to write a web article on the ten best Three Stooges films with Curly Howard. Here's the link to the article:
https://hubpages.com/entertainment/L...he-Curly-years

This is the list. It covers Curly's films from 1934 to 1945, as that's what's in the 13 disc Time Life set. I know his films went to 1947, with his cameo in "Hold That Lion" released that year, too. Time Life does sell a more expensive set that features all 190 Stooges short subject films, but this is the from the 13 disc set.

1. "Punch Drunks", 1934
2. "Men In Black", 1934
3. “Three Little Pigskins”, 1934
4. “Hoi Polloi”, 1935
5. “Three Little Beers”, 1935
6. “Grips, Grunts and Groans”, 1937
7.“Violent Is The Word For Curly”, 1938
8. “A Plumbing We Will Go”, 1940
9. “An Ache In Every Stake”, 1941
10. "Micro-Phonies", 1945

What would be in your list of favorite films with Curly? There's some I missed from the group, like "Pop Goes the Easel"-1935,"Disorder in the Court"-1936, "Three Little Pirates"-1946, and more. Yes, it does cover four sports related films in there-boxing ("Punch Drunks"), football ("Three Little Pigskins"), golf ("Three Little Beers", and wrestling ("Grips, Grunts and Groans").

There is no way I can pick 10 favorites. I love all of the episodes he is in, especially the ones before he got sick. My favorites are all that you mentioned above plus more. I love the episodes where he is really"on" and has so much energy that he is almost out of control. I read somewhere that director Del Lord sometimes would not yell cut when he supposed to because Curly would be in the middle of some of his lunacy and Del didn't want to take a chance on missing any of it on film.....

I don't know them individually like that. I can only say that all my favorite Stooges episodes/movies have Curly in them. Shempisodes are mediocre in comparison and we don't need to acknowledge the other two.

I agree Rzzzz, it was tough to pick just 10 favorites from Curly's films with the Stooges. Thanks for the info about Del Lord and Curly during filming.

We need The Three Stooges sets on blu ray with historical commentaries, audio extras, archival interviews, etc. just like the Twilight Zone series blu ray set. That would be amazing....

Definitely. I might take the plunge on the DVD set. I've waited too long for a BD set that probably won't ever happen. Apparently, the shorts were mastered in HD over a decade ago, but there's no way to see them.

And Curly was the greatest. I can tolerate some of the Shemp episodes, but I never had an interest in the Joe Besser or Joe DeRita shorts.

Nice list hasslein. I like how 8 of the 10 are different from my group.

JJS,
I wish there was a Three Stooges BD set, too. I'd also like a BD set for Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang/The Little Rascals, and others.

I'd definitely pick up the Rascals. I suspect the film elements aren't in great shape for them, though.

I do like The Little Rascals The Complete Collection DVD set from about a decade ago, though.

Are you talking about this one?

Yeah, it's great. The one I have has a silver cover instead of vanilla but I believe it is the same discs.

I am going to work on my top ten Three Stooges episodes and post them here but it is going to take me some time. I know for sure A Plumbing We Will Go and Disorder In The Court will be on it....

Yes as a huge Our Gang Little Rascals and Stooge fan. That our gang set is nice and it also comes with a few silent our gang comedies. Love for all these to come to bluray but i doubt it.

Rzzzz,
That's the one. I enjoy seeing the original titles and before that the MGM Lion. Obviously, I enjoy the films the most!
