There have been movies which I gave a low rating originally here on Blu-ray.com, watched again after a couple of years and suddenly liked.
Sometimes it's really surprising to see the original ratings. For example, I gave Monsters (2011) a very low rating but enjoyed it when I watched it a second time. |

I thought Pulp Fiction was just average when I first saw it. Awhile later I gave it another go and I absolutely loved it. I remember not liking the Bruce Willis parts at all my first watch, but on my second those had some of my favorite moments. I don't know why, but it just clicked with me on a rewatch.

Thunderbirds 2004. Done a complete 180 a few years back and started taking it for the goofy, cartoony fun it is.

Dark Shadows.
I kind of brushed this off as Burton Lite when it first dropped in theaters in 2012, partially due to it coming on the heels of the widely-disliked Alice In Wonderland, partially due to the sound in the theater I saw it in being "off" throughout (all distant and echoey, like a speaker was out), and partially because I wasn't in the "mood" for it at the time (who releases an atmospheric, kooky horror comedy in the middle of MAY, and right after the first Avengers came out? ![]() ![]() |

The Pirate (1948). As a fan of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, I had high expectations for this when the DVD finally came out in 2007 (keep in mind I had no knowledge of the film's cult reputation and its troubled production). Boy, was I disappointed. I thought the performances were all too over the top, the songs unmemorable, and the story flat. And it actually annoyed me that this movie got such a nice DVD release with a new commentary, featurette, and musical outtakes and demos when other Judy films I felt were more deserving.
Flash forward to 2 years ago. Some friends of mine up in New York went to a special screening of it at the Museum of the Moving Image. They came back raving about it, and I was perplexed. "If they think this movie's that great, wait till they see Easter Parade or The Harvey Girls!" I was thinking. But I decided to pop it in again and re-examine the film for the first time since I bought the DVD. I actually found it to be better than I remembered it. Last year, I caught an airing of it on TCM and watched it again, and then I watched it again this week as part of my Judy Garland marathon leading up to the new Judy film this weekend. With each viewing, I find more and more to like about it. I understand the farce they're going for now, and the story is actually better developed than most MGM musicals where the plot is usually a thin excuse to hang musical numbers on. Judy was having a miserable time during this movie because she knew her marriage to director Vincente Minnelli wasn't working, but you'd never know it watching her. Gene likewise looks to be having a blast, and his stuntwork and choreography is top notch. The songs by Cole Porter also are very good even if they're not all the most hummable. While I wouldn't say I love this movie now, I do really enjoy it. It's gone from a 5/10 to a 7/10 for me, and I look forward to when it finally hits Blu. |

Blade Runner. But then again, I was 11 or 12 when it came out and was expecting something completely different from a movie that had flying cars and Han Solo/Indiana Jones in it. It wasn’t until I saw it a decade later that I started to get it.

I'm the exact opposite. QoS gets worse and worse each time I watch it.
Off the top of my head, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is one that has grown on me with each casual rewatch. I would love it if that gets a 4K upgrade. |

Another movie that transformed itself on further viewings is The Matrix. I always thought it was "just fine" (my original rating was 3 stars). Watched it multiple times since 1999, on VHS and DVD. It was only when I rewatched it on Blu-ray for the first time three years ago that it finally dawned on me how insanely great it is. It was a revelation, like seeing a completely new movie. How could I have missed the boat so completely throughout the years?
This is strange because usually when I change my mind, it happens in relation to a movie that I had seen just once before, not multiple times. |
