I'm an insurance agent and one of my clients just called me up to see if his new plasma and high-def dvd player would be covered. Of course, the first thing I asked him was if that was a blu-ray player.
He explained that he went with HD-DVD because of the cost of the player and more for the upconverting capabilities. He also mentioned the 5 free movies deal. I thought about chastising him about his purchase, but hey, the customer's always right. He also said he wasn't going to be paying $30 per movie anyways and that his old dvd's look great on the player. It wasn't worth losing 2 autos and a homeowners policy by arguing with him. Have I betrayed my blu brothers? ![]() |

It won't be obsolete for him since he wants to use it as an upconverting player mainly. Toshiba takes a loss on player sales and makes nothing on movie sales with this guy.

Thats what I was thinking, I was even considering myself purchasing an HD-DVD player for $130 and using it as an upconverting dvd player and just selling those free hd-dvd's to make up the cost. Maybe we should all buy those cheap Toshibas, they lose money with the player in hopes of the consmuer buying the hd-dvd's to make their profit, but if the players sell and the discs dont they lose lots of money.

next time he is in your office, make sure you have all the info about Blu there.
It doesn't matter though. He will be forced to see the error of his ways now that Blu has 85% of the sales, and 70%+ of the market. There is no way HD DVD will even survive. They will have to get Blu-ray or live with inferior/out-of-date/dead technology. |

thy betrayal calls for the ultimate punishment: Me pulling my tongue at you
![]() but seriously, don't worry, in a few months when hd-dvd is to be found in museums only, he will turn around and realize his foolish mistakes. When that happens it will be time for you to give him the ultimate punishment ... |

No, you did not betray anyone, and he is not “stupid” or a “dumbass” for purchasing a HD DVD player. Not everyone knows much about Blu-ray and HD DVD, therefore, price plays a great role, and not everyone can afford a $400 player.

You might have told him " oh, BTW HD-DVD is almost dead and has only two studios supporting it" That way he does not get pissed at you later when it has 0 studio support.
Overall his fault for not doing his homework and buying on price point. Maybe Mommy never told him you get what you pay for. Maybe that should be HD-DVDs new ad.... " HD-DVD, because you get what you pay for" |

I've never paid $30 for a BD movie. (Some BD's are available from Amazon for $15!). Sony will give you a coupon for 5 free BD's if you buy a player OR TV from them. Oh yes, nearly all BD players will 'upscale' a regular DVD as well. Good luck to your client when he goes to Blockbuster to rent an HDDVD movie. Good luck to your client when he tries to sell his HDDVD player on Ebay and finds that it's not worth the price of shipping it ($8). However, I have heard that HDDVD disks make good coasters and keep the tops of your table from becoming stained. Unlike cup saucers (that come with all your other dishes), they are also disposable. They also work well as an emergency reflective device - in case you are lost at sea.

Why list, or get insurance on something that's worth nothing?
