Default Redemption of Blu-Ray codes in 4K?

I'm sure this has been raised, but I'm not seeing a quick answer. If I redeem a digital code from a Blu-Ray on iTunes for a film that is available in 4K on iTunes but has no 4K UHD physical release, will the code redeem for a 4K or HD version? There are a few Blu Ray releases--UNCUT GEMS, WAVES, HARRIET--that have 4K versions on iTunes but weren't released in 4K physically. Thanks!

Interesting questions. I am curious about this too but at the same time I probably shouldn’t care. Odds are the 1080p disc that you got will look better than the 4K stream.

Good chance, yeah, although I've been pretty pleased with the quality of 4K streams from iTunes lately. The bigger difference, to my eyes/ears, is the soundtrack--the iTunes audio just can't compete with the richness of a physical disc (unless, of course, it's a Disney disc...).

I have a few movies that I bought on Blu-Ray at 1080p and redeemed the codes on iTunes for digital copies. Recently, I noticed that some have been upgraded to 4K.

If it has an itunes redemption, then yes - it will give you the highest rights that is on itunes at the time. Most Movies Anywhere studios for newer movies do not have an itunes redemption though. Usually only lionsgate and paramount will have an itunes redemption option for newer movies.

Direct ITunes redemptions are the only ones that will give you the 4K “upgrade”. If a studio is MA and that’s how the code redeems you’ll only get the HD version.

That happened to me with John Wick Chapter 3. Bought the Steelbook from Target and it redeemed 4K with that funky slip scan from Lionsgate.

It would be really cool if there was a section to discuss digital codes... oh wait...
