Hopefully the Playstation 5 will be able to playback 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray optical discs. The PS4 never could play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, just standard Blu-ray discs.
The following is a quote from page 42 of the June 2019 Widescreen Review magazine: "And Sony has announced that the next Playstation platform, PS5, will be 8K capable. This is also expected to arrive in 2020." |

I blame TV manufacturers. Morons dropped 3D as a buzzword and now need another thing to replace since 4K HDR is "so last year". To me, i think 4K will be the dominant resolution for even PS6 and framerates at 4k will hit 120fps on PS6 gen but they'll finally make it possible to have a decent gaking experience at 8K. Technically it won't be as much of an improvement but tech advances are all about reaching new heights.

Personally speaking i sit very close to a display and i'd probably notice the difference in a side by side at that distance or possibly even without if i knew what i was looking for. Usually sharper quality on distant objects is the giveaway imo. For me, 4K 120hz is the next evolution for games in PS6 and 8K will be nothing more than a novelty until we get GPUs really capable of pushing out consistent 60fps. |

I sit approximately 8 feet away from my TV. I went from a 60" 1080p plasma to a 65" 4K OLED. The difference to my eyes is stunning! But it's not JUST because of the resolution uptick. It's a combination of that, along with the HDR brightness, the absolute black, black levels, the wider color gamut, etc. I'd imagine the difference between 4K and 8K is probably even smaller than the difference between 1080p and 4K.

I have both (1080p 3DTVs and 4K TV, so I'll have to do a comparison once I get my PS5 to play my UHD of Alita Battle Angel, which was part of the blu ray 3D set I wanted. In the stores though, I was only able to see a difference up close, as both looked awesome IMO, 4K and 1080p. |
