United Kingdom Gandhi 4K UHD Amazon exclusive

Hello All - what is the difference between the soon-to-be-released Gandhi set from Amazon, and that which appeared in the Columbia box last year?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is it just some fancy pants tat and packaging?

Looks like 'fancy packaging' and 4 disc to fill it up. Hoping this is a sign for more single releases form the Columbia Classics Vol 1. Maybe other stores/outlets will get a standard 4K release (2 disc + digital).

Coming Aug 23, 2021.

Yes. The discs inside will be exactly the same.

There was a bonus dvd in the Columbia Classics set that had the feature:
Quote:
Mr. Attenborough & Mr. Gandhi Documentary (480i, 50:45): A wonderful 1983 feature exploring the making of the movie, the man who made it, and its subject in great detail.
If these 4K and BD discs are the same then you might not get that DVD bonus feature.

The DVD wasn't in the Ghandi case but was a general bonus disc that contained the extra that was specific to Ghandi and is a difference with the new stand-alone release and what appeared in the Columbia box.

I've only just realised Sony split the film over 2 BD66 discs. Why???? Surely it would fit on a BD100 in respectable bitrate? Most annoying.

This has probably been done to death in other threads, I hadn't paid attention but am more interested in a standalone. Might just leave it.

Same reason as with Lawrence: to cram on a gazillion audio tracks, 6 of which are lossless. The average bitrate for the combined audio tracks alone is over 17 Mb/s, it will collectively peak higher than that so Sony needed to split the movie to give the video enough room.

The discs are the same as what was actually in the Gandhi case in the boxset. The bonus disc is its own thing.

I believe that BD66 discs play nicer with cheaper players

Because it's got a bunch of lossless and high bitrate lossy audio tracks for the other languages plus lossless English 5.1 and 2.0 as well as the remixed Atmos. In total those tracks have an average bitrate of almost 17 Mb/s (!) which would steal precious bits away from the video encode if the entire 191-minute feature were stuffed onto one UHD100. Example: you could get away with an average of about 65 Mb/s for the whole transport stream (video + audio + subs) which then cuts your video bitrate down to an average of 48 Mb/s. Not bad, not great, still very workable in the right hands but Sony wanted to give the movie just a bit more room.

Why do these look like they were taken with a ‘flashback to an earlier time’ filter from an early ‘70s movie?

The back camera on my phone has been busted for a while. I'll be getting a new phone eventually.

If anyone doesn't want to either (a) pay £35 for a load of tat, or (b) wait 48 months * for a bare bones UK version, just throw your £16 ** at this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B095GNTW...hk_typ_imgToDp

* May not actually be that long, but who knows.

** I was actually charged £16.01 at the checkout.
