Quote:
One of the greatest comedians of all time, Richard Pryor gets raw and real in this brutally funny and lacerating self-portrait. Following the notorious incident in which he caught on fire while high on cocaine, nearly losing his life, Pryor exorcised his inner demons by writing, producing, directing, and starring in this dizzying hall-of-mirrors biopic and backstage drama, which traces a young comedian’s rise to fame, from his childhood growing up in a brothel to the colorful experiences that shaped his edgy comic voice to the addiction struggles that brought him to the brink of death. As he did in his legendary stand-up sets, here Pryor fearlessly turns his soul inside out, revealing the deep vulnerability that made his art so compelling.

Never heard of the film until today but am very much looking forward to checking it out in 4K! Releases choices like this are always welcome as they push the format into uncharted territory and hopefully inspire other labels to be more adventurous as well.

Great to see more Richard Pryor on 4K. Still want to get Live on the Sunset Strip, so this should make a good double bill with that one.

So glad Criterion is giving this one the business, it feels like it's been forgotten for so long. It's a messy, complicated film but considering it's kinda/sorta Pryor's own "All That Jazz" (of a sort), it demands a watch on that count alone. He never quite had the career he should have gotten in film, and there probably should have been a lot more movies like JoJo in his filmography before he went.

Just watched this on Tubi (it's FREE!), and you can bet I'm buying it when it comes out from Criterion. It's probably the most honest film I've ever seen. I've gotta hand it to Richard... that's some honest admission of self-sabotage right there, and a very powerful warning to others on how you can let yourself slip into the abyss if you're not careful messing with this stuff.

I think this was on Encore a lot in the early 90s when that channel first launched. This film felt inescapable back then.

Didn't know this existed until a few weeks ago. Blind buy. Opened it up to check the quality, got really into it and had to stop myself so I could enjoy it later.

This is a superb release and I’m very happy that Criterion put this film out in 4K. Exceptionally restored and for Criterion HDR/DV standards, the encode is very nice. I haven’t yet got a chance to watch the entire film but there’s barely any blocky highlights or anything egregious. Buy with confidence!

If you can and would like to see more "niche" titles in that vein released in 4K, please support releases like this.

Checked out this film recently (might have been looking at another film beforehand) and having had a look at the review here, the Criterion UK Blu-ray release is going on my 'possible purchases' list.

For those in the northeast, there is currently a 30% off coupon that stacks with the current 50% off price. Brings it down to just $17.49. YMMV is you're in another region of the US
