Inferior DVD playback on Samsung BD P1400?

I picked up an open box P1200 model a couple of weeks ago at Best Buy. When I got it home I found that wouldn't play any of my blu-ray discs but did fine on my DVDs. While I was playing with the controls I noticed the sharpness and and noise reduction features under the HDMI setup menu. Since my DVD playback looked a little soft on my Sony rear-projection HDTV, I upped the sharpness on the player and it helped the image.

When I went to Best Buy to exchange my model, they gave me an even trade for an open-box P1400. I went to the HDMI menu and noticed that the sharpness and noise reduction options were no longer there. The literature and ads for this model all mention these features. Did they move them, or eliminate them? My blu-ray discs look wonderful, but my standard DVD playback still looks soft on this model; it looks better and sharper on my old progressive scan DVD player. Any thoughts or help?

The 1200 had a REON VX precessor in it. It's a very powerful deinterlacing and video processing Chip. So device allow control over it like in the 1200

The 1400 doesn't have this chip... it's running on a custom design

Davy, I'd post this question in the 1400 users thread, where folks are intimately familiar with the player's settings. The 1400 will not upscale SD DVD's as well as the 1200 you returned (it's the Reon chip!), but it should look substantially better than your existing SD DVD player.

Thanks for the replies. I've posted twice on the P-1400 review thread within the last week and have been completely ignored.

Why would the 1400 model actually have something taken away from it that the 1200 model had? I'm getting ready to return the whole thing and trade in for another brand.

I don't know why Samsung would remove the feature unless it's somehow related to the Reon chipset present in the 1200 and not present in the 1400. I own a 1200( ) and so am unfamiliar with the specific features on the 1400. Let me see if I can find a member I know with a 1400 so that they can respond to your questions.

I asked about the REON chip on the BD30 thread and it was commented that just by adding that chip, you tack on $100 to the cost of the player.

The BD30 does not have the REON and I think the upconverting looks sharp.

Maybe they removed it as a cost issue.

Samsung had planned two successors to the 1200: the 1400 and the 2400. The principal difference between the two models was to be the addition of the Reon on the 2400 model, which was to cost ~$100 more than the 1400. For reasons unknown, Samsung dropped plans to introduce the 2400 and we got only the less expensive, Reon-less 1400.

Davy, I PM'd a 1400 owner to see if he'll help you out in the 1400 thread.

Very good, I remember that now. I was planning to get the 2400, but bought the PS3 instead.

Even more, the 1400 didn't have Bitstream at launch and the 2400 was the 'REON + Bitstream player' , Once the 1400 had Bitstream. Less people wanted the 2400 as it was 200$ MSRP than the 1400 and not a lot of people wanted to pay that so that DVD look about 10% or less better..

I was in the EXACT same situation as you... Bought the 1200 it sucks, want to trade in for 1400 but they cant get one in. I got them to eventually give me the open box panasonic bd10 for $299 ($60 more than the 1200) The BB I go to is VERY service oriented, but maybe you can get them to do the same for you? From what everyone says on here, a bd10 is by far better than anything normally in the $299 price range.
