Suzhou River (2K Restored)

Welcome Music is going to release Lou Ye's Suzhou River on blu-ray in Taiwan, this release is coming May 14th. This is the first Lou Ye's film that receives a blu-ray release.



Suzhou River was restored in 2K from the original 16mm A-B negatives back in 2015, when this restored version re-release in Taiwan last year, they announced a DVD release was coming but no plans for blu-ray, so glad they changed their mind.

According to it, the audio will be DTS-HD MA 2.0 and Dolby TrueHD 5.1, but sadly only traditional Chinese subtitles were included.

This issue has appeared with the recent Zhang Yimou box set release, as well. On one hand, the distributors owe us nothing, I get that.

There are two other possibilities...

-- They are cutting down on shipping/export/import costs/stresses for distributors and/or rights holders

-- An American or British label bought rights to the title and has asked to restrict the Chinese region's release so that fans won't import this one first


Otherwise...I suppose we should really just bone up on some Mandarin...

It seems like this distributor's (very few) releases, per what's listed on the site, have no sign of English subtitles on anything -- and not to mention, there are plenty of Taiwan items, especially DVDs of asian titles, that do not contain English subtitles. So I can't say I am surprised here.

Alas, they are always welcomed when included.

The subtitles in that Korean Zhang Yimou set is because they just illegal copied the materials from other releases and then add Korean subtitles, that's why only Red Sorghum has English subs, because the original Disk Kino release have them.

As for Suzhou River, Welcome Music seems a quite little company with very limited blu-ray release history, I assume they just didn't care to include one more language on subtitles.

The actual disc is region free and include English subtitles! Also both DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD tracks are in original 2.0.

That doesn't mean anything. https://www.yesasia.com/global/her-b...0-en/info.html lists no mention of English subs but it contains them, for example.

I can confirm this. The backcover incorrectly lists Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD MA 5.1. Perhaps subtitle information is wrong there as well, but the disc definitely has English subs. Even the restoration notice at the beginning of the film is in English as opposed to Chinese.
