Default Devilman: Complete OVA Series (Discotek Media)

Release Date: August 28th 2018

Quote:
Demons, once trapped in the glacial ice of the Earth, have been unleashed on mankind after centuries of non-intervention. These beasts are swiftly infiltrating our peaceful world in hordes. Only two young men have the ability to stop them, Ryo Asuka and his best friend, Akira Fudo. But the only way to combat a demon, is to become a demon. Only a young man with a pure heart can possess the powers of a demon. That young man is Akira Fudo! By gaining the powers of the brave demon warrior, Amon, Akira becomes humanity's only hope... Devilman! Fighting for humanity, and satisfying his demonic urges, Akira battles demon after demon - from the grotesque Jinmen to the alluring harpy, Sirene. Can Akira and Ryo protect the future of humanity, or is this battle far greater than they have imagined?

Based off the classic manga by artist Go Nagai (Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey), and directed by Tsutomu Iida (Mighty Space Miners, Hellsing), Devilman is a bone chilling horror that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It includes the original Japanese language with English subtitles, and the Manga Entertainment English dub.
Was surprised this doesn't have its own thread, so thought I would quickly make one. Always a good day when 80s/90s anime his Blu-Ray!

So complete ova means this will have the birth and demon bird right?

Does discotek do a good job with their releases? I'm new to buying anime on blu ray really.

Discotek is perhaps one of the best US distributors out there. I could go into a ridiculously long book as to why that is so. Discotek is the most consistent and competent US label, I don’t think twice about buying their products. I can’t say the same for others like Funi or Sentai. I’m significantly more inclined to blind buy something from Discotek than anybody else. They’ve got some pretty excellent titles and something for everyone.

Yeah. Discotek is amazing. They license some of the best series (that they can afford) and have very nice releases with actual thought put into the aesthetic design of the packaging usually.

I only have a few Discotek releases but they are top-notch with compression, bitrates, and extras. I’d go as far as to say that their releases of “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” and “Street Fighter 2: The Movie” are Criterion-level good.

The good news is the best series that they can afford are the niche 80s and 90s anime no other licencor cares about any more.

That’s all I care about. I’m surprised Sentai is doing “Aura Battler Dunbine”. I know that ADV released it but Sentai seems to rarely release older titles excluding stuff like Gatchaman and Nadia.

Love seeing that people still appreciate the classics, that's why discotek are my favorite. Old school hand drawn animation will always be the best to me, gives the work so much personality.

Wonder if it'll have the first western release of the third OVA Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman & if so whether it'll have a dub or not, been wanting to watch it for ages but health failed before I got to it so cant keep up with the subs now, with my luck they've probably forgotten the third one altogether

Nope. Just the original OVA from 1987/1990.

And the Toonami dub isn't even that bad. It's got minor changes, such as changing "Go to hell!" to "Suck on this!". (Somehow that was more kid-friendly?)

Not much point in that then, doubt theres a massive remastering effort gone into it, guess part 3 will remain forever out of reach

Discotek doesn't have the rights to it, nor does any English licensing company to my knowledge.

I'll have to check out what all discotek has done. The only anime I liked were 80s and 90s movies. But I always liked the original dubs, corny a lot of times but being my first experience with anime without them it doesnt sound right to me.

Cant afford much frivolous stuff for a while but maybe I'll luck out on Ebay or whatnot. But my favorites as a kid were vampire hunter d, fist of the northstar, demon city shinjuku, dominion tank police, devilman, black cat, 8 man after, ninja scroll and so on.

Amon isn't technically Part 3 of the 80/90's Devilman OVAs and takes place in it's own continuity. Though it's inclusion would have been nice, it's likely got it's own license requirements.

Wrong. Considering it was made in the 80's/90's, chances are the original film elements exist and can be given a high quality. Plus this is Discotek, they have done stellar remastering for other animes.
