Default Philips UHD Blu-ray player - BDP7501

Thought it was worth spinning this off into its own discussion.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player
At least so far, Philips is one of only three companies to announce a 4K UHD Blu-ray player, along with Samsung and Panasonic. The Philips BDP7501 features HDR support, which means that it should fit in well with any of the 4K TVs the company has announced this year, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the player is its compact design. The player looks more like a set-top box than a standard Blu-ray player, and the minimalist look is striking.

The BDP7501 features built-in support for both the HEVC and VP9 codecs, so streaming 4K content from Netflix, YouTube and others will work as intended, and should look great. Upscaling for non-4K content is also included. Both HDMI 2.0a and 1.4a are supported, and connectivity is provided via both wired Ethernet and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. No set release date has been announced, but Philips says the BDP7501 will ship in spring 2016 and will sell for under $400.

Don't like it. Reminds me of those horrible little DVD/Bluray players you can still possibly get for £30 from Currys/Wallmart (probably).

I want my first player to be a tank.

This would be a nice player for anyone that sets it on the top of a cabinet or shelf under their TV, as opposed to in a media stack or shelving. I much prefer the "tank" size and look of the players personally.

So far we have a curved samsung, a non 3D panasonic, and a philips giant appleTV looking box.

I'm leaning toward the Phillips myself, assuming the Panasonic will be more expensive.

But honestly it's going to come down mostly to release date. If the Samsung ships in March, and the other 2 don't ship till later, I'll have a Samsung.

The Philips will probably be the cheapest option, so probably a good one for people who want to adopt the format early but may upgrade to a better player down the line.

It looks pretty neat. It's size definitely has me wanting to know more about it. If I can fit it better into my cramped entertainment center, then that is a plus to me. And if it's cheaper than the others, so much the better!

Disappointed that Sony seems to be waiting to see if the 4K UHD format takes off before releasing a player. I'd rather settle for a Philips than the curved piece of junk that Samsung is putting out. Hopefully they'll release at the same time.

I am confused as to if this play supports Dolby Vision. I have seen it reported that it does then another article from CES says it does not. Also do we know if it has dual HDMI outs like the Samsung.

Post Philips 4K Ultra HD BD player BDP7501

I just built a .pdf data sheet for Philips 4K UHD BD player, model BDP7501. Nice overall build quality with a solid aluminum chassis.

Launching May 2016 with a pre-order special offer.

Enjoy!

You need a special 4k player to play 4k titles, right?

Yes, and earlier this week at CES Samsung, Philips and Panasonic announced their first 4K Ultra BD players.

Samsung sis scheduled to launch first, mid March followed by Philips, May, 2016. Panasonic has not yet announced the launch date.

Ultra HD Blu-ray titles are also beginning to release March 2016.

I need official release dates for the players.

I'm a bit bummed that the Philips is getting a much later launch date than the Samsung, I really hope that I'm not stuck with a curved Samsung just because Philips comes out months later.

What's the hurry to buy the very first player - particularly if that particular model has got something about it that already bothers you?

Based on what I see, I'm probably waiting for the 2nd generation of players. Though I was probably doing that anyway. I'm sure as hell not buying a Philips or a curved Samsung just because they are the only ones available - maybe a 1st gen Sony.

Not sold on the Philips form factor either, looks like an Apple TV or a Mac Mini.

Can't anyone make a player that isn't either curved or completely impractical? Next thing there will be a zeppelin shaped one.

The panasonic 4K Blu-ray Player will be from my understanding around $1300 and It won't be out until Aug/Sep at the earliest. It's gonna be very expensive I think that I will pass on the panasonic but lean towards the Philips 4K blu ray player and It looks like they will be releasing two 4K Blu-Ray players according to highdefdigest.

$1300 for the Panny? I'd get the Philips for <$400, too!

ray, thanks for pointing out my omission, the inputs/outputs. I'll update the .pdf in the morning and replace it with all of the i/o. But for now Philips BDP7501 has two HDMI outputs.

Once can be used for audio only. So with an AVR that is not HDMI 2.0A with HDCP 2.2 you can just send HDMI 2 from the 4K player to the receiver with just the audio from the disc and HDMI 1 can go directly to your 4K HDR display.

The BDP7501 also has one USB 3.0 in and Wi Fi, g/n/ac speeds and a physical RJ45 Ethernet input port.

One more tidbit that I'm hoping and also assuming Philips can add when needed is the update for Dolby Vision HDR. The peak luminance spec of the BDP7501 is up to 10,000nits so the player is capable to deliver the difficult Dolby Vision luminance spec.

At my CES meeting I urged the proper folks at Philips "The sooner the better" to get this box launched.

We'll see and it won't be long.

-Robert
