Default Direct playback of any Blu-ray disc on your PC for free without ripping

I found this video on youtube does it work?

Also it claims you need a Blu-ray drive which supports BD-XL discs

Does this work? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-8x-e...lack/9243009.p

I didn't watch the video, but this works: http://www.makemkv.com/libmmbd/

So a combo of MakeMKV and VLC.

As far as I know you need a drive with the 3.01 firmware (newer drives disable the function with newer firmware) to recognize 4K discs, you can playback normal BDs with one of the free software players (like Leawo). I tried playing a 4K UHD with VLC, but it crashed the player, not sure why, but my PC isn't the fastest around.

Ok, so what's a good drive, around $100, that can at least read blu and 4K discs? Once I have that I'll worry about getting 4K to play.

Most PC Blu-ray drives will play BDs, but you're going to be hard pressed to find their firmware version listed before hand. There's not much difference between ASUS or LG drives. The MKV software mentioned above (in the video) has a forum where people discuss them.

Do PC Blu ray drives read 4K discs at all?

Also, I would think I could update the firmware myself?

Thanks for posting this! Been searching for a Blu-ray decryptor to use with VLC for some time. MakeMKV didn't even cross my mind, but it works beautifully.
