Default Dolby Vision 2 - Big Changes Coming to Dolby Vision

Quote:
Content Intelligence & Precision Black

Dolby Vision 2 is claimed to be even more powerful than its predecessor, incorporating a complete redesign that introduces new “Content Intelligence” features and expands the capabilities of Dolby Vision beyond mere HDR enhancement by introducing a new element that’s focused on improving motion handling.

The AI-enhanced Content Intelligence element of Dolby Vision 2 allows it to “authentically and automatically” (two very important words in Dolby’s vocabulary) optimize the performance of TVs that sign up for the system to the specific qualities of both the incoming content and your room’s viewing conditions.

Included within Content Intelligence is a new Precision Black feature that seeks to tackle the common consumer complaint that dark HDR images look too dark in bright rooms by improving clarity in any viewing environment without compromising artistic intent. A new Light Sense element fine-tunes picture quality through the prism of a new, more advanced ambient light detection system in conjunction with new reference lighting data from the source, while a new Sports and gaming optimization feature introduces new enhancements such as white point adjustments and motion control designed specifically to address the unique needs of live sports and gaming.
Quote:
New Tone Mapping Technology

On top of all this, Dolby Vision 2 introduces new tone mapping technology specifically designed to take advantage of the latest TV technologies, with their increasingly extreme brightness and colour range capabilities. The bi-directional tone mapping Dolby Vision 2 provides apparently gives content creators new controls with which they can better unlock the potential of these cutting-edge TVs, delivering more brightness, contrast and colour while preserving the artistic vision.
Quote:
Authentic Motion

Dolby Vision 2’s new Authentic Motion element, finally, is described as “the world’s first creative driven motion control tool to make scenes feel more authentically cinematic without unwanted judder on a shot-by-shot basis”.

Same. I was interested to see the details of DV2 as I didn't know this was even something in development. The AI of it is not great.

To be fair, AI has been used with great success in gaming in the form of Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) by NVIDIA. It's incredible how good the technology is now.

If there is anyone who can leverage AI for video in a way that improves image quality but also maintains creator intent, it's Dolby.

I read the title and said 'Huh, really? Does DV really need fixing'? and considering the stupid bubble I just KNEW without reading the thread yet that it was gonna be yet again some IA fake bullcrap and lo and behold there it is. Ugh.

Companies are focusing on this shit so much they're putting actual advancements behind to put IA just for the sake of it because that's what industries have decided to invest on now, everyone thinks it's the next gold. It's a bubble and I can't wait til it bursts.

Nothing will burst. This is like the time that people thought the world wide web was just a fad and would eventually die out.

AI is a useful tool if you know what to do with it. There are poor examples of AI tech, and there are great examples as well, just as with any other technology. I'm sure that smart people with an expertise in their field, like Dolby, know what they are doing.

Of course. This, like many other market crashes over the last several decades, was mostly a result of the boom & bust cycle of monetary policy (extremely low interest rates for many years prior to the crash), and partly a result of irrational Y2K fears.

Needless to say, the Internet was not a fad and did not die, just as AI won't.

Let me guess, you've either got something invested in AI stuff or you've been bought by one of those ''AI entrepeneurs." Congrats.

I do some, but turns out what enterprises and companies are focusing on is generative AI.

Is that effectively VFR like Avatar 2 had?

To be fair, you have absolutely no clue what DV2 even is yet and how it implements any type of AI. How is your leaping to defend these "features" any different from someone automatically rejecting it because the press release advertises using AI?!

I wasn't defending any of the features. I was addressing silly claims of an AI "bubble" bursting.

We have a general idea of what we can expect from DV2, and I'm sure we will get more details soon along with some demos.

I have to imagine that AI has an especially bad rep in the movie space. But I get the impression that this is probably closer to something like DLSS in the sense that things would be more controlled, and you're not just generating things.

Concerning part would be if the results were poor, whether there would always be a way to disable it.

The bubble bursting doesn't mean that.

AI isn't going anywhere, but there will certainly be a point where companies stop pushing it as some new fangled thing. And maybe they will focus more on using AI when it's quality, instead of shoving it everywhere just to please shareholders.

Eh. If you watch in a dark room you don't have to f*ck around with brightness but then this isn't Dobly's first attempt at ruining HDR just so's people can watch it with the curtains open. This is Dobly IQ 2 rather than DV2. The motion stuff is also more lowest-common-denominator-type pandering IMO.

Precisely that. Thank you. It's like everyone is joining on the trend, even companies that don't need AI, everyone's just doing it because business suit people are saying it's the biggest thing right now. And when things like these happen, that everyone tells you 'do this, it's the moneymaker right now, easy money!", it always end up in a bubble bursting, simple as.

As a vendor, I can say companies freaking LOVE AI right now. It's not even funny. Clients are constantly asking about it. They don't really know what it is, so everything in press releases is "AI-enhanced" or "AI-assisted" just to make these people feel like they're cutting edge.
