As the title states, I’m looking for a player that has an optical/toslink output. The receiver I would need to hook it up to only has optical as a surround sound option, so HDMI and coaxial ports wouldn’t be useful (I’ve tried converters but they haven’t worked and switching a/v equipment isn’t an option). However the video output isn’t capable of 4K so a UHD player wouldn’t be needed, unless of course it would be cost effective.
I’ve checked my local big box stores and they only options I could find were out of my price range since they were higher end UHD models. Any help on model recommendations that are still obtainable would be greatly appreciated. |

I haven't seen a model with optical in a LOOOOOOOOOONG time. Coaxial is what most seemed to have for dedicated digital output. You might get lucky poking around a pawn shop or thrift store for old players. I have picked up a pile of old Samsung and Sony models at the local stores.

![]() Have to assume you are using a 2006 or earlier model. Example Denon 2807 model used HDMI 1.1. (May 2006) |

I’ll most likely go with another UHD player (either the LG UBK80 or Panasonic DP-UB420) if I can’t find any older BD players locally. I’d prefer to keep the price low if I can find a deal on an old one, but I wouldn’t mind having another UHD player as a backup. |

![]() Note any used Oppo player has a optical output if by chance find one for private sale locally, but yeah all these current consumer UHD BD players including less discussed TEAC’s Tascam BD-MP4K or blu-ray BD-MP1 only if lucky provide coax out. So something like a Xantech XT-DIG-11 converter in conjunction with a Sony X800M2 ($219) that has a coax output maybe. That player and adapter are at Crutchfield as one example. ![]() |
