Default Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made

Bloody-Disgusting

Quote:
The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival’s writeup:

“There’s a reason why you haven’t seen ANTRUM: because you’d be dead. This occult-heavy horror film shot back in the ’70s focuses on a pair of young siblings who head into the woods to grieve over a dead pet and unwittingly discover a literal Hell on Earth. The film has achieved notoriety due to its troubled lifespan: A theater in Budapest screened it in 1988 and burned to the ground; several film festival programmers attempted to play it before mysteriously dying; and a violent and blood-drenched San Francisco riot followed a mid-’90s revival effort. Believed to be cursed, Antrum has since been untouched—until now.

“Bookending the original 35mm Antrum print with an all-new documentary about the film’s legend, filmmakers Michael Laicini and David Amito have packaged a truly singular viewing experience, one part catnip for film historians and a much bigger part experientially demonic cinema.”

Thought this was... okay-ish?

Guess I'm a sucker for modern horror films filmed to appear older than they are, complete with audio/video glitches. The flashes of demonic symbols etched into frames in split sections were cool. There were splices of what seemed like a different film that was jarring as it was perplexing

As one critic said it best the mockumentary that frames this movie within a movie seems like window dressing for a no-budget, mediocre film that couldn't stand on its own.

I got this from my local library and, having watched it, I'd say "okay-ish" is a good word for it. This is definitely my kind of horror film, but anytime a film makes BIG promises (like being "the deadliest movie ever made"), I have high expectations and, from that standpoint, Antrum didn't really deliver. It has some good moments and I like the creepiness that runs throughout, but it just didn't really SCARE me that much. The "documentary" that bookends it is actually somewhat effective, especially the bit after the movie proper ends, as I liked the context around the symbols/subliminal messages. Worth a library or streaming rental, at least!

But does anything compare to Rory from v/h/s1985?
