Chasing Amy (1997)

Anyone else a fan of this film? I think it's one of Kevin Smith's best films, hands down. I think we've all came to a point in our lives where our best bud is totally against your girlfriend or wife. I've had it happen to me with my first fiancee, but not to an extreme like that. Does anyone else have their own "Chasing Amy" story like Silent Bob? I know I do.

Hands down, Jason Lee's best performance. It kinda saddens me to see the roles he's taking these days since My Name Is Earl got canned. Seeing him do Alvin & the Chipmunks was a shocker because he shows range in this film. As Banky, at one point he's telling at Holden (Affleck) about

[Show spoiler]how Alyessa (Adams) is totally the wrong girl for him

. And then after

[Show spoiler]the ice hockey game, we see Holden on the couch crying and Banky is like; "Damn."

This film is in my top 10. One of the greatest films of the 90's in my opinion. I also need to get this one on Blu-ray.

Not only one of the best Kevin Smith films. It is actually the most well made of the Kevin Smith movies. I still lean towards Clerks as my favorite because it just an awesome movie, however Chasing Amy is great and yes Jason Lee is unbelievable in this.

This movie is above and beyond the best film Kevin Smith has directed. The dialogue in this movie just did it for me. I always wondered why Jason Lee has not gotten the opportunity to be in more films. Affleck was actually good in this movie as well. I was dissapointed when Criterion chose not to the Blu-ray for this movie. Once this title gets into the $15 range it will definitely be in my collection...

Yeah I have this on Blu ray myself. Very good movie. There are several scenes in there that stand out to me, most of all the scene in the rain by Holden's car.

I agree with everything here. Kevin Smith was trying to get Jason Lee cast as Fletch for years when he was going to direct the re-boot. I think he would have been great in it.

Criterion didn't put out a bluray because that would be "double dipping" from what I read.

There was talk of releasing a single disc that you could snap into the case for the bluray, but I don't think that ever happened.

EDIT: I was slightly off. It was the special edition DVD that was nixed by Criterion:

It was rumored that 2007 would see the release of a Chasing Amy X DVD, in a similar vein as the Clerks X DVD and the Mallrats: 10th Anniversary DVDs. But at Comic-Con 2007, Smith confirmed that a special "supplementary" DVD will be released next year to go along with the Criterion Collection DVD released earlier that will just have more extras on it. Smith later said Criterion rejected the idea of a special edition as being "double dipping," but he is hopeful that new featurettes can be included on a future Blu-ray Disc release of the film.

Gigli was like Ben Affleck's downfall. He went away for a few years and now he's starting to come back. He used to do like two or three movies a year and then like vanished into thin air. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000255/ Given Smokin' Aces was a 2007 film, he's been away for a while.

So this movie was re-issued earlier this year with the encode switched from VC-1 to MPEG 4. Does anybody know if it looks any better?

It's the same as the disc that's in the triple pack, which is the same disc as the oldest disc. I really think that mpeg-4 listing is a misprint. Because the Jay and Silent Bob Paramount re-press is still mpeg-2. Still, if by some miracle they did re-encode the old baked master I'm sure it looks the same.
