Default Tales From The Crypt

One of my favorite shows ever... oh heck, it's my absolute favorite of all-time. Scared me so much as a kid back then thanks to the Crypt Keeper who was easily my childhood boogeyman (I'm sure he was for many back then). As an adult I enjoy the show much more now and with me being over my fears I can see how brilliant it is now. Did a wonderful job of feeling like the 50s-era EC Horror comics that influenced it and attracted so much exceptional A-list talent, many of whom otherwise have never been involved in Horror. The show sadly took a steep decline downhill during Seasons 6 and 7, though there were still some good episodes among them. I miss catching new episodes Wednesday nights on HBO.

I'll be shocked if there aren't other fans here. Wish we'd get news of a complete series BD release already, the show needs it bad, especially the earlier seasons. So in need of an HD clean-up and remastering. I'd gladly pay top dollar for a complete series set with hours of bonus features.

I enjoyed this show a lot growing up. Really hoping the reboot is good.

Who has the rights?

I notice HBO doesnt even have it on their streaming service which makes no sense given they would probably like to have as many hours of programming available as possible to compete with Netflix

Warner has the rights. I believe the series was edited on video, like a lot of shows from the early '90s. They'd have to be re-edited from scratch, like what was done for The X-Files.

It can really benefit from a good HD remaster looking at how grainy and hazy the image quality on many of the older episodes on the DVDs are. Has there been any word at all of a possible BD release? I'm hopeful we might get something next year for the 30th anniversary.

The intro looks amazing in HD.
Check the TftC movie ‚Demon Knight’, nice Surround too.

Reboot? The one that TNT was making than decided to cancel the whole idea or is HBO rebooting this time because I can only dream the series returned I sure miss Masters of Horror series should have gotten another season.

Wish Tales from the Crypt was streaming on HBO Go or was available on Blu-Ray with the movies included.

If not mistaken the rights went to WB when the later seasons moved to Sci-Fi back in the day which went through some editing for censorship and yes how stupid was that move like Lexx season 2-3.

the dvd sets were below average quality and of course look even worse now with our current technology...

I hope we get a season 8 on HBO, not TNT. And without M. Night Shyamalamadingdong's involvement.

A revival on HBO would be great. Just bring back the animatronic Crypt Keeper and John Kassir as the voice. Between that and a complete series BD release next year for the show's 30th anniversary.

Watching these old HBO promos sure brings back memories. And reminds me of just how much the Crypt Keeper used to terrify me as a kid. I used to be scared to tune into HBO for fear he'd show up.

If the show gets a BD release it'd be great if HBO would dig through their vaults and have all these promos and whatnot on there. I remember they did tons of different promos with the Crypt Keeper back then.

They should completely redo the Cryptkeeper to be more like the EC comics and rotate in the Vaultkeeper and The Old Witch. Keep the puns and the sick humor but make them more creepy.

It'd be cool to see the Vault Keeper and Old Witch appear but I hope they'd still keep the Crypt Keeper in the mix with them. Funny enough, the animated spin-off involved both characters who often feuded with the Crypt Keeper for control of the show. The animated series was surprisingly pretty good actually, once you got past the fact they had a cartoon series aimed at kids spun off from such an explicit adult show.

Hilarious how they made a toy of a ghastly-looking character like the Crypt Keeper aimed at kids. That doll is obviously modelled after the live-action puppet and not the cartoon version.

So does the complete box set have all the uncensored episodes that aired on HBO or do they censor them like they did when they put it on cable?

I loved watching these during the 90s on HBO and eventually bought the box sets. It would be neat if they rebooted the series.

HUGE fan of this show since i was 8 when it premiered and i taped every episode off HBO and collected back issues of the comics from EC, saw the movie on VHS at age 9 and saw the show spin-off movies in theaters as a teen and had cards plus played the pinball game growing up.

I'd love to see Scream Factory release this show on bluray

So what’s the cheapest way to get this entire set on DVD? Are the transfers good or should I hold out for a better release?

What’s out now is probably as good as it’s going to get. Keep checking for sales and eBay until you find a price you like.
