Default Sony Pictures Doubles Down on IMAX Enhanced

QUOTES

"Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), IMAX, and DTS announced this week that SPE will release “hundreds of new titles in the IMAX format over the next two years, including all upcoming SPE and IMAX theatrical releases.”"

" What is Imax Enhanced? To sum up briefly, it’s both a certification program and an end-to-end ecosystem for audio and video gear and content."

"Will the forthcoming IMAX Enhanced titles sourced from the SPE library be available on Ultra HD Blu-ray as well as streaming services? When I put that question to the company, I was told, “Sony has already released a number of titles on 4K UHD disk with the IMAX Enhanced program, and as the slate of new titles is announced, you'll be hearing about many more soon.” So, yes, definitely maybe, but the prospect of new releases appearing on Ultra HD Blu-ray is looking pretty good."

Oh boy, I can't wait for all the Sony UHDs to look like the IMAX "Enhanced" Blu-ray of The Dark Knight...

Anyway it sounds like this is mostly related to the audio mixing fluff?

Practically all the prior info about this “marriage” has pointed to streaming releases in the 4K IMAX realm by Sony, although there are a couple of discs that got released it seems.

I guess we have another curveball thrown our way in light of this article, whether it amounts to a meaningful amount of IE disc releases is a lot of bothersome guesswork. Sony usually hits it out of the park with Dolby Atmos releases, too bad they can’t leave well enough alone and stick with what’s been working for them. On the other hand, maybe they’re getting a little compensation out of this, times have been tough lately for Sony.

No, but there will be IMAX Enhanced TV's in the future since its a certification program that replaces the old THX certification. There is already IMAX Enhanced A/V receivers from Pioneer and other companies.

It's such a niche market though. Your average consumer isn't going to care about it. So I don't imagine even your premium end TVs are going to have a flashy sticker on it.

Is it only the US disc that's enhanced though?

See I've never understood why DNR, EE ect all came about. Is it because of the switch away from CRT TVs? Or were they always there, but just more hidden by CRT?
