Nice! I wish that I could have a Projector again. However, since my bachelor days are behind me, I can't just stick a 135" screen in my living room anymore.

Great news but I would always wait until there are some real life reports as to the performance and sharpness, good news nevertheless. At the moment all native 4k projectors seem very overpriced, especially when you consider lots of projectors suffer a variety of problems after just a few years use which might lead you to need a replacement sooner than what you'd like.

Folks need to be aware these DLP based projectors are not native 4K like the Sony and JVC projectors. For more info see Kris Deering's article in a recent issue of Sound and Vision. The last issue has a review of one of these DLP projectors.

Hi,

None of the mass produced JVCs I know of are native, they only have an imitation shifting technology. If I remember properly the article, this new Benq claims it is native 4k, like the Sony's are. I'll put the JVC's in the same bag as too expensive for my taste despite not being native.

If I was going to buy an imitation 4k I much rather go for the Epson that is priced at much more reasonable levels but I decided it is not going to happen. I'll just wait until real 4k are priced at a reasonable level.

BenQ says 8.3M distinct pixels. I havent found the datasheet for the DMD they are using for it. I guess we will have to wait to get more info.

I have checked the link again and if you click on specifications it specifically says Native resolution 4k UHD. Besides that on the first page say true 4k, I'll be surprised if it is not but we'll have to wait until is out, being 4k doesn't mean it'll be better than a good 1080 projector. It already has one thing I don't like which is of the two HDMI inputs only one is 2.0 HDCP 2.2 the other isn't which mean only one supports 4k and judging by the size, weight and price the lens quality may be accordingly matched. A top HD projector will be more expensive than this. Still, a step in the right direction.

Only 96% of Rec. 709... not even a mention of how much DCI-P3 coverage it has (which is the typical measuring stick for current UHD TVs until they achieve a more significant percentage of Rec. 2020 coverage). Not really enough to take advantage of the expanded color gamut of UHD Blu-rays.

For 4K projectors that can really take advantage of the format, laser projection technology is going to have to become more affordable. Ideally, within a decade or less, Sony's Ultra Short Throw projectors should be less than $10,000.

Not the 2550, but does anyone know if the 3550 suffers the same issues as the review for the 2550 below with the washed out colors?

https://www.tvspecialists.com/optoma.../#.YSv_Ot8pDDc

Also if this was something addressed with firmware updates and the 2550 (or 3550) would be improved?

Considering picking up a cheap 4K projector as an interim solution to replace a near decade old 1080P one, until I go all out later on down the road.

That issue was only present with the initial firmware on the HT2550. The multiple updates since then feature fantastic color depth and dramatically improved tone mapping. Have had this projector for 3 years now and it consistently impresses, especially when combined with the HDR optimizer on my Panasonic UB820.

That said, the newer 3550 reportedly has a better contrast ratio along with various other improvements. I don't have one to compare but, based on the glowing reviews I've read, would definitely recommend picking up that model instead.

Completely different thing. The unit supports 4K input but the imaging chip is does not have 4K-resolution pixel count

The only true native 4K front projectors under $100K right now are from Sony and JVC.
