Default Sodom and Gomorrah(1962) Coming from Explosive Media December 9

Sodom and Gomorrah Blu-ray A

Sodom and Gomorrah Blu-ray B

Saw this over at CineSavant:

Quote:
Now Ulrich is busy pulling together a fancy special edition Blu-ray for Robert Aldrich’s Italian epic Sodoma e Gomorra, released here in 1963 as The Last Days of Sodom and Gomorrah. Up ’til now our only access to the show has been a dreary mal-formatted DVD that I think is OOP. The same eyesore transfer is also being cablecast on the Fox Movie channel. Ulrich has gone to the trouble to commission a new scan of the long version of the movie in Italy, from original film elements. It was originally shown in Italy in a shorter version but they must have gone back at some point and prepared a ‘versione integrale’ — Ulrich’s Blu-ray will be full-length.

As you can see by the new image scans the visual improvement is really apparent — at its full width and clarity the show looks big and expensive again. It was expensive: between this and Visconti’s The Leopard, Italy’s biggest studio Titanus practically went out of business. The stars are Stewart Granger, Pier Angeli, Stanley Baker, Anouk Aimee and Rossana Podestá, the great music score is by Miklos Rozsa. I think I have a handle on the controversy surrounding the involvement of Sergio Leone — full discussions of the movie appear in several reliable movie biographies.

The screenplay delivers useful advice, such as the immortal words “Beware of Sodomite patrols!” The lavish Bible epic will be released by the German Explosive Media label; as was Dundee it’s primarily for the Deutsch-speaking market but the plan is for it to be Region A friendly and carry English & Italian Language tracks. The projected release date is December — a Christmas present for devotees of director Robert Aldrich.

Same.

I've held off watching this picture for literally decades hoping to see it in at least a presentable version, so this news is very exciting for me.

Now I wish Disney would allow a restoration of THE BIG FISHERMAN and release it, which I think would complete my viewings of these larger than life 50s-60s biblical epics.

I have waited so long for this good news. To finally see it properly again will be a real treat. The shorter Italian version actually came out in the 1970s. The original release there was full length. The short version is what was released in Italy on DVD. It's terrible.

Regarding The Big Fisherman. I spoke with somebody at the Disney Archives a couple of years ago and asked specifically about this film. He told me it had recently been restored for the archives. I asked it there was any plan to release it and he said no. When I asked him why his response to me was "Because only your and 17 other people on the planet care about this movie." Charming.

I got the new German Blu-ray of Sodom and Gomorrah today and it looks spectacular.
It's great to finally have a beautiful transfer of the film. A minor quibble is that the first part does not let the music play out over a black screen as the Fox Cinema Archive DVD does but all of the rest of this disc is so fine it really is nitpicking to complain about it.
The Media Book has both the full length version and the considerably shorter 1973 Italian reissue on separate discs. The original Overture plays in part on the menu screen.

Mine arrived today (January 20) from grooves. I had pre-ordered, and shipping time to the US was 10 days after it had shipped. And shipping was free, too.
