Default CinemaScore, PostTrak, etc.

I know that some forum members have mentioned CinemaScore's "grades" when discussing movies. Here's a great article about how CinemaScore and other companies assess audience reactions:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...os-turn-648341

CinemaScore uses audience reactions from basically one or two screenings at only FIVE theaters. That is not a reliable gauge of how people in general will respond to the movie.

PostTrak looks at audience reactions at twenty theaters for ten days. That makes much more sense.

Kick Ass 2 performed more like a D+ movie than a B+ movie. i guess this article has a point.

Yeah. I never understood the point of asking people who rushed to see the movie on opening day if they liked it. They're already predisposed to like it. Also, there are lots of free advance screenings these days, and when you leave the theater, you can hear people saying, "I'm going to see it again on opening day." Well, if that's the case, they will bias the CinemaScore sampling even further.

Another example

Baggage Claim got an A- cinemscore and opened a bit higher than Don Jon which got a C+ cinemscore but Don Jon is making more money.

Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean everyone else is required to hate it.

Anyway, Cinemascore for the most part has been a very good predictor of how a film will hold in future weeks (a recent example being The Butler). Though the company has acknowledged in the past that some rabid fans will skew a score (the first case of this was on the 1980 film The Black Marble, which flopped at the box office but got a B+ score due to Joseph Wambaugh fans filling the theatres on opening weekend), they might as well be the Nate Silver of the film industry.

But Baggage Claim was aimed towards a smaller audience and opened in a lot fewer theatres. When comparing the two by theatre, Baggage Claim has fared better against a film that had a much bigger marketing budget and a bigger star in Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Someone made a list of DC and Marvel film Cinemascores a couple years ago. I copied it here and added in movies from some other comic companies as well. The list is in order by score, and then year. Note that many older films, and some recent films, such as The New Mutants, do not have Cinemascores.

Any film's Cinemascore can be looked up here. Feel free to use this to add other themed lists of Cinemascores to the thread:
