Default Underwater (2020)

Updated with trailer:

-----------------------------

Kristen Stewart is in negotiations to star in Underwater, a Twentieth Century Fox adventure thriller that is being produced by Chernin Entertainment.

Will Eubank, who co-wrote and helmed the sci-fi thriller The Signal, is directing.

Underwater centers on an underwater scientific crew that, after facing an earthquake, are forced to go on a dangerous journey for survival. The script, written by Brian Duffield with a revision by Adam Cozad, has been described as an underwater Armageddon.

If a deal is made, Stewart will play the film’s lead, a jaded and hardened crewmember. A March production start in New Orleans is being eyed.

The move puts the actress, who has developed a strong résumé working on a wide range of indies since her days of toplining the Twilight movies, back into a more mainstream space.

I read that this is being described as Armageddon "underwater" but to me it sounds more akin to The Poseidon Adventure, (under sea earthquake, survivors battling the ocean, searching for an escape) which is fine by me because I love TPA. I'm interested in seeing this when it hits theaters.

I hope it has a great ensemble cast. Now if we could only get Maureen McGovern to come up with a new spin on "The Morning After."

Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr, Jessica Henwick and TJ Miller round out the main cast.

I'd rather she stay since she's proven herself to be an actress that can be reckoned with.

Sounds promising with the acting Talent involved. Hopefully the script is solid.

After defending Stewart for years I've stopped acknowledging those who constantly feel the need to bash her. It's a waste of time. They have some vendetta against her that makes no sense. Best to just let them keep hating by themselves. They just want attention.

As to the movie, I'll see anything Stewart does.

If Stewart could act instead of giving one dimension wooden performances then there would be less people harping about her. While she's not the only one these days in Hollywood who does this, she's very good at it which is why I stay away from her films.

Clearly you haven't seen her in anything beyond Twilight, in which hardly anyone was good. She's been good in a number of indies, and I just saw her in Personal Shopper, she was great.

I have not seen that shopper movie but I've seen most others but only in small doses as my wife likes her. I still stand by my opinion though.

Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper, even American Ultra. She's proven she's a great actress. I've got nothing for the naysayers anymore.

Maybe you do, I don't know. But most jump on the wagon of blind hate, and I have no doubt it's because of Twilight. She's proven herself. Subtle acting isn't bad acting.

This is the point. She is continually proven herself to be a wonderful actress yet, some people still hate on her. There is no reason to it other than having something against her.

People dismissing Stewart based on the Twilight films alone would be like dismissing Ewan McGregor solely on the Star Wars prequels.

I've now seen Stewart in three films outside the Twilight saga... American Ultra, Clouds of Sils Maria, and Personal Shopper, and my opinion of her as an actress is much more appreciative. Just IMO.

I think it's just the echo chamber at this point. The Twilight films were big and all mainstream viewers knew her from. It's the popular opinion so people just repeat it without doing any homework, i.e. watching her lesser seen indie films.

Side note: Still Alice was the film where I started to take notice of her true acting ability. Her performance there surprised me.

.
I think it's more than that. There seems to be an inherent snobbery bordering on misogyny when it comes to the abilities of any actress who's young and attractive on here.

I would add THE RUNAWAYS and INTO THE WILD to Stewart's list of impressive performances, and her emotionally conflicted young women in the terrific ADVENTURELAND and STILL ALICE rank among her very best. I don't always find Stewart as compelling in big Hollywood product ( i.e., SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN), so I'll be curious to see what she delivers here...and here's hoping her upcoming CHARLIE'S ANGELS reboot gives her the opportunity to reveal some serious comedic chops.
