Default Why no DTS on HD-DVD?

To my recollection HD-DVD carried no DTS/DTS-HD audio tracks, why was that? I know they had Dolby Digital + which I can only assume is identical or close to it to Dolby Digtal TrueHD, but why no DTS?

I mean SD-DVD has been doing it for years, hell even many Laserdisc releases had DTS sound.

Around 17 titles including Basic Instinct, Deer Hunter, and Terminator 2 were scheduled to be released on HD DVD in DTS Master Audio in France, Germany, and the UK in late 2006 and early 2007 but not in the U.S.

DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA are optional codecs on HD-DVD, HD-DVD players are required to be able to decode DD, DTS, DD+ and TrueHD.

With Blu-ray, players are required to decode DD and DTS and optionally support DD+, TrueHD, DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA.

I have to say, it did have its advantages over Blu-ray.

But I am a Blu-head.

They were released. Xploited Cinema used to import and sell them in the US

no problem buddy, we're cool, thanks for your response too. i will state that as a lover of HD-DVD and still a collector of it, i found that most of the DD+ audio tracks on those disc were incredibly well done and were almost always at the limit of the bitrate for DD+. they really took advantage of it. the audio on most of those disc were amazing.

i watched the C of Riddick and the soundtrack is thunderous and that's a lossy format too. i know the DD+ is like 1.xx mb capable and some of those movies are right up there and you can hear it.

that's a plus (pun intended) for Vudu switching to DD+, i wish apple would switch to DD+ and use it to the fullest too.

i'll also have to go home and check to see if i have any HD-DVD movies with DTS-HD-MA soundtracks. i've got a bunch with Dolby TrueHD of those i'm sure. i'll get back to this thread tonight or over the weekend.

There are a few HD DVDs with DTS HD MA. Pans's Labyrinth is one.

I was going to say...I thought a few had it. Pans being one. I guess in the end, it doesn't really matter. HDDVD used Dolby TrueHD for pretty much everything which, once decoded would produce the same quality of sound.

HD DVD died pretty early in the development cycle. DTS HD came along later than TrueHD. And most red discs used DD+ rather than TrueHD.

It took them a while to even release a player that could decode DTS-HD MA. I remember the Toshiba A35 came out right before the death of the format. Before the A35, no players that I know of could decode HD MA.

Edit: Or maybe I'm thinking of Full HD 1080P capability. At this point I can't remember.

i thought that all HD-DVD players out of the gate had to supported 1080p & network capable; mind you, it's been a while---for all of us on this topic!

i still have and use the a35 and it can do 1080p & DTS-HD-MA, the format just didn't have many releases in that codec before it lost out. two that i know of that used the DTS lossless codec were Pan's Labyrinth and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow; both of which i own.

i'm not sure of others. i think you might be right about pre-A35 players decoding DTS-HD-MA. the spec's for the 30 & 35 are both listed in the manual for the 35 which is used for both since the differences between the two were few. if i feel like digging it out, i will and i'll report back to this thread.

The movies were 1080p but the first player HD-A1 and the HD-A2 and A3 were all 1080i max. The A20, 30, with firmware hack, and A35 could do 1080p along with the XA2.

HD-DVD died before DTS had the opportunity to support the format, when blu-ray prevailed the war between Sony and Toshiba manufacturers.
