United Kingdom Sneakers (1992) now available for pre-order

Marking the first of a new collaboration between Plumeria Pictures and the UK's beloved Film Stories magazine (and podcast), SNEAKERS will be released in a new special slipcase edition on June 28, and is now available for pre-order at PlumeriaPics.co.uk and store.filmstories.co.uk

"Why don’t more people talk about Sneakers?" says Film Stories editor Simon Brew. "It’s hard to think of a finer ensemble suspense caper from the 1990s, especially from a major Hollywood studio (Universal). Yet with its blend of suspense, wit and memorable characters, this is just the kind of movie that deserves to be seen again and again. Robert Redford leads the all-star cast, including Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier and David Strathairn. It's co-written by Phil Alden Robinson, Lawrence Lasker and War Games scribe Walter F. Parkes, and is one of the few films directed by the brilliant Robinson, who has the small matter of 1989 classic Field Of Dreams to his name. The result is a smart, hugely entertaining and laugh-out-loud tech treat. It already seems they really don’t make ‘em like this anymore."

Tech specs and extras will be announced over the coming weeks, so hopefully there won't be Too Many Secrets for long.

Will you be giving a rebate to those of us who have already pre-ordered and have paid as see you are now offering a 10% discount ?

Not the way to treat loyal customers.

You should follow the Powerhouse (Indicator) approach of offering the 10% discount when pre-orders go live for the first time and then stopping after a month.

Wow, you don't muck about do you!

A new label gives you 10% off another order and you accuse them of bad customer service. Oooooookay........

Moaning about £1.79...... Could be a new level of tightwaddery.

Even though 10% off is cool I'll see what else they've got in the pipeline before I use it.

Quite.

Only valid until the end of May, mind. At the moment they don't have anything else that takes my particular fancy, and I think it's still too early days for them to be making multiple monthly announcements like their more established competitors, but it's nevertheless a welcome offer, particularly from a fledgling company that probably isn't quite counting the green profit just yet...

I just think it's a nice gesture so early on in their existence.

Can't fault the gesture. Let's hope the end product is as good as we hope it is.

It feels like an age since I pre-ordered Sneakers. 14th April.... feels a damn sight longer ago than that.

The last version I have is the UK laserdisc, which I bought brand new in Virgin Megastore, Bristol, 1994. Yikes. I still remember it cost £19.99.

HMV Northumberland Street in the 'toon. £19.99 too. Didn't buy many UK lasers mainly the USA versions from the aforementioned defunct place.

Yeah, I bought a lot of US ones from Virgin. I always did wonder how they got around it with BBFC rules and that, and equally wondered why the others like HMV and Our Price didn't bother.

Unrelated, but it always bothered me that the Bristol Virgin kept all the LDs right next to the porn videos, and if anyone was a couple of aisles over it would look like I was intently scouring the porn section. THANKS VIRGIN MEGASTORE!

If you've lived in Bristol as I do, you know that it's only the posh people from Clifton and Cotham who are looking down on you for potentially going through porn. And they're always hanging round Old Market trying to cover their faces while they go in and out of the "naughty" shops anyway.

Without wanting to completely hijack Plumeria's thread and turn it into "ooohhh, isn't it a small world!" chat, I moved away in 2004 (to Midsomer Norton, where Bergerac investigated all the murders) and have only been in to the town centre a few times since (mainly for concerts), as Bath is obviously a lot closer and easier.

I thought Old Market had been gentrified a bit in the intervening years - are the grot shops still there?

Ah I know Norton, used to play gigs at the Wunderbar and the Stones Cross back in the day.

Old Market is actually fine nowadays, you're right. Still got a couple of the sex shops and "massage parlours" along the main high street but otherwise it's decent. Nice bakeries, cafes, coffee shops, and the Exchange and Stag & Hounds are good for gigs and stuff. I lived in Bedminster for four years and I'd rather Old Market these days.

Happy memories of the Virgin store though, bought a lot of films and music there in my youth.

Regarding Sneakers I'm definitely in for this one. I love the film and never bought the previous release so I'm looking forward to it.

Virgin was massive back then. I used to visit the indie record shop down the underpass bit near the bus/coach station too for my music.

FP is where I first met Dave Prowse (R.I.P), Beatties and the Corn Exchange for comics were my fave haunts too.

I was but a mere student back in the late 90s

But yes, back on topic, Sneakers was immediately pre-ordered. It was nice to receive an email from Plumeria (twice!) this morning with the discount. Hopefully they'll announce something nice later this month!

Are you able to tell us if this is a new master for the film or same old one that Universal knocked out like 7 years ago?

Not quite the second I could but I ordered it alongside Soft Top a few weeks ago, they posted Soft Top that evening and it arrived like the next day. Spectacular service thus far, although my offer of QC'ing their Sneakers release has seemingly been rebuffed
