With the US Scorpion release due to go on sale (on Ronin Flix) on Monday, July 22nd, what's the word regarding the UK release from 88 Films? There's been nothing but silence for the longest.

This is a great release. Was a blind buy for me but its a fun slasher movie and it makes the most of its unique setting . The violence is quiet tame compared to Friday The 13th, My Bloody Valentine or Halloween II so i'am surprised its still an 18.

Sounds like 88 might be using the old master seen on the Shout BD. Easy way to tell between new and old transfer is if the film opens with the United Artists logo, it's the Scorpion 2k remaster, while if it's the 20th Century Fox logo, it's the old Fox HD master used for the SF Blu.
Guess it was smart to grab the new Scorpion BD from Roninflix after all. |

Of course logos in credits don’t mean all that much in terms of licensing, e.g. StudioCanal’s John Carpenter releases with the Universal logo, Flight of the Navigator |

The prior UK DVD was from Anchor Bay (using the Fox master but supposedly had TVA's logo on the cover art), and the 88 UK BD is also from TVA but the question is if it indeed uses the old HD master or the new transfer on Scorpions BD. The recent Scorpion Releasing Blu-Ray is under licence from TVA Films, who held Canadian rights (from the ownership of Canadian production company Astral Films) and acquired US distribution rights after Fox's expired. For Scorpion's recent BD release, things get kind of crazy. They did a 2k transfer from a US based dupe negative (even has an MPAA R rating card at the end) and what seemed to be a 35mm French/German/Spanish print for the pre-credits scene (even though the audio is still in English), as the film oddly enough opens with the United Artists Transamerica T logo. |

Flight of the Navigator was a co-production between Producer Sales Organization (who had a joint venture set up with TriStar in the US for Short Circuit and 8 Million Ways to Die) and Viking Films. During production of Navigator, PSO was financially unstable from the flops it had churned and Viking Films was on the verge of bankruptcy. They got Disney involved to finish the film for them in return for allowing placements for their products and the then-new EPCOT attraction. Disney got North America distribution rights in perpetuity while PSO held on to international rights in most parts of the world (IIRC, the opening was slightly changed on those prints to the standard PSO logo of the time while removing Disney references within the credits). Apparently, Disney also had UK theatrical rights to Navigator but not video, as PSO had a deal with CBS-Fox Video in the UK for putting out their titles on video. This explains why all international releases references PSO (and oddly enough, TriStar Pictures) on the covers, but oddly enough use US film elements sourced from Disney with their vintage logo intact as well. |
