4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

[4.5/5]

The Rules of the Game had already been restored and released in Blu-ray format in France in 2005, for a result that the most tolerant had, at best, described as “perfectible”. The comparison with the American Blu-ray edition released by Criterion a few months later had however quickly set the record straight, relegating the French edition to the rank of master clearly unworthy of the medium. Today, ESC Éditions is doing even better, with a new 4K restoration of Jean Renoir's film. And this one turns out to be impressive in all respects: despite the contrasts seeming at times a little too boosted, the rendering of the film is absolutely optimal. It should also be borne in mind that this film was shot in 1939, and that the original negative no longer exists: knowing this, it seems that what ESC Éditions is offering us today with this 4K Ultra Blu-ray edition HD of The Rules of the Game is literally a technological miracle. The restoration and calibration were carried out by Hiventy, using a composite duplicate, largely nitrated. The soundtrack was restored by L.E. Diapason, from an incomplete nitrate sound duplicate and the negative from the 1959 mix. On the sound side, the film is naturally offered in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, the its not saturating excessively. In short, this is the ultimate presentation of Jean Renoir's masterpiece!

As for supplements, there is a presentation of the film by Pascal Mérigeau, film historian (28 minutes). The latter will put The Rules of the Game in its filming context, and will broaden its analysis of the film not only to the rest of the career and life of Jean Renoir, but also to other films. Very interesting !
