It's not great. Like Carpenter, Hill's post 80's stuff is not that great.

Well, it doesn't even have a blu ray.

Despite it only being so so, I'll pick it up in a sale.

It's no masterpiece but it's a nice prison fight movie. Think it used to come on FX or TBS a lot back in the early 00s. Rented the DVD from Blockbuster in college.

The overall quality of their respective outputs definitely declined, but as far as Hill is concerned, I'd say that Trespass, his (Emmy-winning) Deadwood pilot and (Emmy-winning) Broken Trail are great, with Geronimo being very good.

This is far from peak Hill, but it's a lean and watchable prison/boxing movie, with some compelling turns from its two leads (though Snipes definitely could have benefited from a stronger characterization.)

When it comes to Carpenter, In the Mouth of Madness is great.

One of the few instances in film where the Direct To Video sequels are significantly better. Undisputed 2-4 are top notch.

Good one. Unlike the sequels, this is a boxing movie. Not the best of the series but Snipes and Rhames are cool here.

I haven't watched Deadwood or Broken Trail, so I was speaking about his films. I couldnt deal with Wild Bill. It seemed like it was all over the place. Last Man Standing is just so dry. It's not terrible, but it just doesn't have a lot of life to it. It's not like his post 80's movies are unwatchable, but it just felt to me like the same drive wasn't quite there. I do think it was kind of there for Wild Bill, but it was just too erratic for my taste.

I kind of think maybe Hollywood just kind of wore Walter and Carpenter down.

Wild Bill has all the right ingredients, especially the cast, but Hill's drive to go against the grain and do something different, while admirable, backfired IMO. Would've been great as a simple popcorn action western with some historical fidelity a la Tombstone.

Last Man Standing is dry, but it also just pales so much in comparison to all of the "Red Harvest" adaptations that preceded it, including the recent Miller's Crossing.

Hill and Carpenter were so incandescent in the 70s/80s that it was only natural they burn out some. In Carpenter's case, I think all of the criticism he endured for things that later became classics a la The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China took its toll on his creative faculties.

Not sure if you've seen it, but here's a lengthy write-up I did in my Hill thread where I compared their careers and similarities as artists: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=307

That's always been my outlook.

They merged the workmanlike efforts of classic b movie western and noir's with with thier own musical and visual styles. With story, they'll just lay it all out there.upfront. You know quick what they're bringing to the table. Which is what your write says.

Not shockingly, I'm also a big fan of Cold in July. Which, I've always hoped would end up becoming one of those movies that sort of gets another life. Which kind of happened with The Mist.Which came out to mixed reactions, but I believed would finally catch another life. Which, it finally did not that long ago. Hopefully Cold in July will sort of resurface and catch on also.

Agreed, I do like the original. It's a decent prison fight movie, but the real star of the series was introduced in the DTV sequel. Scott Adkins as "Yuri Boyka" is probably to this day the role he is most known for. Starting out as the antagonist to Michael Jai White in part 2 and then proceeding to become the star of parts 3 & 4. He had several roles before Undisputed 2, but that was the one where it felt like he was really starting to get some buzz in the martial arts world.

Hopefully Kino brings us the sequels. While they are at it, how about Michael Jai White's Blood and Bone as well.

I think Shout! Factory got the rights to the sequels with their recent Millennium Films deal. We also have the third, and fourth film on Blu-Ray in the US, but not the second how I mean what gives!! I love the first one so I'll be buying this day one, but I love the sequel even more. The third ones pretty great too

Can’t wait for this. This is one of my favorites it’s a shame it toke so long for it to get any kind of HD release.
