I was looking for 4K Chinese movies like The Banquet, The Promise, Red Cliff, Painted skin ... but not one result, not even any Chinese movies (except Crouching tiger hidden dragon). Getting on sites specialised in Asian products, I found some movies I never heard about (Helios, but most were Japanese or Korean.
So are Chinese movies not coming to 4K? Last edited by BigNickUK; 05-14-2021 at 01:00 PM. |

For the US, Shadow, Ne Zha, and (soon) Ip Man 4 all have a 4K option. Due to the smaller amount of demand in the US for titles from other countries (versus a Hollywood movie), fewer titles make as much business sense to offer in 4K, even if the movie was mainstream and popular in its home country. So for now, titles like Parasite from Korea, Pan's Labyrinth from Mexico & Spain, or Shadow from China will be rare unfortunately.
However, when shopping for releases outside the US, various movies do have a 4K option. For example, Shin Godzilla in the US is only DVD and Blu-ray, but in Japan Toho did put it out on 4K. Last edited by vertigop1ayer; 04-08-2020 at 01:41 AM. |

You have to buy them from Chinese sites and 4k is usually released by studios such as Media Asia or Panorama. Helios, Wolf Warrior 2, Shock wave, and Brotherhood of Blades 2 came out in 4k in Hong Kong. If you're in Hong Kong, "CD Warehouse" which is a chain is probably the best place to buy movies in general. Or if you want things shipped, I have used, buyoyo.com.

Like Vertigo mentioned, these three are available as well
![]() ![]() ![]() There are also several that have been released outside the US, which can be found in this thread. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=298180 |

There are also some UHDs of Hong Kong films. The only one that comes to mind immediately is "Mad World" (excellent film) but I know there are at least a few more. The thread in the post above mine should list them all, although you'll have to go off the covers in order to figure out what's available.

I was able to pick up John Woo's Manhunt in 4K UHD from YesAsia.com pretty cheap. While I was there I grabbed the A Better Tomorrow and Bruce Lee Box Set which were mastered in 4K but are sadly only 1080p

Does anyone know what the home video market in Mainland China is like? Even though China is a major economy and a major movie market, the official movie releases at least for Hollywood films to DVD and BD seem to be tiny compared to that of USA, Europe, Japan and Australia. I assume it’s due to high piracy and low income per capita? Most US films don’t seem to get an official DVD or BD release in Mainland China. I wonder whether this will change in the next few years.

All of the Bruce Lee films ("Enter the Dragon" not included) also got 4K releases in France. No English subs and the films have an awful yellow tint to them (thanks, Ritrovata) but they're there if you want them. You can also add English subs if you have some computer knowhow or a UHD player that allows the addition of external subs.

If these movies do start to get 4k UHD releases it would be better for ones that haven't yet had a release, like Hard Boiled, The Killer etc. But then the problem is the international rights for these are a mess. Not to mention the Miramax prisoners. The likes of Jet Li's Hero are just crying out for a decent uncut 4K UHD release. |

Yeah I've been getting a stack of Blu Rays from HK, as well as the few UHDs. And on the Blu Ray releases, they have so often better spec audio like 7.1 on titles that do have a western release - including western movies. Like Olympus Has Fallen has a friend 7.1 HK release, Scorsese's Silence (my fav movie of his) a 7.1 mix. That b grade Rogue has an Atmos release. And it isn't just Chinese movies they have, so many Korean and Japanese movies too.
I hope HK continues to release discs. If they do more UHDs, that would be awesome. Preorders are pretty sparse though... I'm really ticked about missing the Wolf Warrior 2 UHD. I got the Blu Ray though. |

I wish they would release some of the Chinese TV series on blu ray over here. Especially the four Candle in the Tomb seasons starring Yueming Pan, ie: Wrath of Time, Lost Caverns, Worm Valley, and Kunlun Tomb. I do have season 2-3 on dvd with English subs, and season 1 with no subs. Of note, one of the creepiest scenes I’ve ever seen in a film etc is the short scene with the evil cat in season one. Just ordered Kunlun Tomb blu with subs, though probably burned discs.
