Wow this is fantastic news! Great to see 2 new additions to blu-ray, will probably be a day 1 purchase for me.

Already have Breathless & Pierrot Le Fou from Criterion.
Still this will be a day one purchase providing Studiocanal don't botch it.

All of these films have had blu-ray in other countries, but 'Alphaville' and 'Une Femme Est Une Femme' have only been released in Japan and aren't English friendly, so it's great to see them receiving UK releases. The question is whether any of these films will have new restorations. And also whether those already released in the UK if they are sourced from the same masters and don't have new restorations will have improved encodes.

Unless they've done new restorations for the three already available (and, other than Contempt, I don't think they actually need new transfers) then I'm hoping that Une femme est une femme and Alphaville get individual releases. It's out the day after my birthday, so I might end up snapping it up anyway, but it is a bit much to shell out when I already have 3/5 of the titles. I could maybe make some back through selling them to CEX or something.

Well this sounds cool but I'd be buying this set just for Alphaville and Une Femme (and Le Mepris, but I was planning on getting the digibook anyway...stupidly put it down when it was £7 in Fopp earlier this year).

I hope they release Alphaville and Une Femme separately, as I already have Breathless and Pierrot Le Fou (and can hopefully still get Le Mepris). I assume these will be the same transfers as currently released (where applicable)?

separate releases of Femme and Alphaville please. Plus remaster of Le Mepris would also be awesome but holding my breath.

Great news, really pleased Alphaville is coming. Now just need BFI to upgrade Bande à part!

Is this a thread dedicated to pointing out the reasons why you won't be buying it?

Looking forward to it, especially Alphaville.

Well I don't own any of these titles on Blu so this is a pretty exciting set for me, and a reasonable price too I think, but I'll wait for news on picture quality, extras, etc.

I already own À Bout de Souffle, but I'd be happy to sell it on and get this lot dependent on what the price drops to closer to release date. Methinks I'll pre-order on Amazon when it becomes available on there and wait to see what happens.

I'm a little surprised they didn't release it to tie-in with their upcoming season on Early Godard. I can't figure out what the hold up could be either, given that it's available elsewhere.

I'm really pleased to see UFEUF and Alphaville announced, but like many others hope that separate releases are made available. That being said, I'm a bit of a collector of different editions of Godard movies, so will double/triple dip if needs be. I do wish that they'd gone with a more interesting title than Essential Godard too, not least because it ain't in the least bit true!

By 'Godard: The Essential Collection' I assumed it meant 'All the Godard Films We Have the Rights To'. Unlike the Tati set this doesn't cover his whole filmography...they could've named it something more sensible ('The Godard Collection', 'Godard: Five Films 1960-1965'), but oh well.

Still, unless these are new transfers for the ones I've got I won't get this. I reckon it could be worth the double-dip though, as the Tati set was much more affordable than buying the separate releases (plus came with a disc you couldn't buy separately).

I'm not sure how many of the Optimum DVDs were owned by Canal or sublicenced from a third party, but SC have the rights to Goodbye to Language 3D - which they've already released on Blu-Ray. I haven't seen even the majority of his filmography, but I think that it is pretty essential as well.

As Yami says, SC do have the rights to a whole bunch of his films. Perhaps it's a case of "The Essential Godard That We Could Be Bothered To Upgrade Bar Goodbye To Language"!

Optimum released this DVD set:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jean-Luc-Godard-Film-Ultimate-Collection/dp/B0019GJ40G/

Some of those are definitely licensed from Gaumont. Not sure how many are 100% StudioCanal... It would certainly be nice if more of the Gaumont Godards received UK blu-rays as I think all of them have blu-rays somewhere now. Rights issues could prevent SC releasing them all on blu-ray. I'm not sure the cynicism in this thread is justifiable seeing as none of us have any actual facts!

Ah right...maybe it's five of his films they already have HD-ready? Or are these new restorations?

I'm guessing that it's a case of the former. Hoping for the latter tho!
