Default Study Finds That Some Audiences Tire of Expletive-Filled Films

Quote:
Filmmakers using “F***,” “God***” and “Jesus C*****” as a swear risk losing some of their audience, according to a new Harris poll.

Using “Jesus C*****” to swear is the biggest offense, with 33 percent of the general public saying they’d be less likely to see a movie if they knew beforehand of that particular piece of dialogue. “God***” was second at 32 percent and “F***” was third with 31 percent.

Various demographics disagree on the acceptability of profanity in movies, with young people not minding nearly as much as the elderly. In fact, more than half of those 72 years of age and older will avoid movies with “God***” and “f***” in the dialogue.

Opinions also vary among the sexes, with 37 percent of females saying “f***” bothers them in movies while only 26 percent of males agree.

Evangelical Christians have the biggest problem with swearing, with 90 percent saying they might avoid a film using “Jesus C*****” to swear, 86 percent saying the same about “God***” and 74 percent objecting to “f***.”

Evangelicals, which the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life says make up about 26 percent of the U.S. population, also object to milder swearing like “sh**,” “da**,” “h***l,” “p***” and “c***” far more so than do secular audiences, though none of those words scored above 50 percent even among Evangelicals.

I would have thought Evangelical Christians would be too busy trying to force their beliefs on others than to have the time to watch movies.

And yet these same people have no problem with excessive violence.

You can mow down a gross of people but one hell or damn and there's going to be hell to pay.

Hypocrites.

If it's a hard "R" and doesn't hide it then I have no problems with cursing in certain films.

Other occasions, I really do identify with this poll. I hate to hear "Jesus C*****" blurted out and it does offend me as a Christian.

Speak for yourself. I'm a Christian and I have a big problem with excessive violence in most films. That's why I avoid slashers and most "harder edge" action films. I make certain exceptions though, when the violence is relevant to the story being told. For example, even the content in The Passion of the Christ is nothing, when compared to an historical crucifixion. Another favorite of mine is The Crow, where the behavior of the criminals (including excessive profanity, sexual references, and violence) is necessary to explain the main character's motives for killing them. Having said that, I don't approve of such content being placed in a film, when the story would work perfectly well without it.

The Passion of the Christ is an anti-Semitic guilt-trip exploitation directed without any subtlety and has no message, other than what Jesus suffered. If you liked it, be my guest, but Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ is far more meaningful to me.

I'm sure those crappy faith based movies are more there speed. Perhaps they should go there and quit trying to play the moral police on the rest of us with their self righteous attitudes
Are we seriously getting so politically correct? Are movies going to wuss out in order not to offend people in order to get their money because it's seems to be about getting every last dime out of whatever audience they can.

And you wonder why mainstream movies suck nowadays.

yes, but then the entire country must be hypocritical then--- our network and cable television can show people being torn to pieces in gory detail on THE WALKING DEAD but "heavy" swearing is still a no-no....

It's not just a religious thing.....

I'm just doing Scorsese. If I did Scarface, I'd have to had more films. Like from the Coens, Tarantino, Rob Zombie, South Park, and that F*** documentary.

My point was that we have the greatest filmmaker alive and his most well known films are a PC nightmare.

Those people in that poll can keep their far more dangerous PureFlix movies to themselves while the rest of us enjoy movies with salty language.

I respectfully disagree about Gibson's film. As for Scorsese, the only piece of his work I've seen is the short film for Michael Jackson's song Bad, and his voice role in Shark Tale.
