I don't know why this has the reputation it has on this forum, but I thought it was pretty solid.
Is it anywhere nearly as good as the original trilogy? Absolutely not. It is, however, eons better than the utterly confused "Diary of the Dead", which has no idea what it wants to be and is perhaps a slight notch down from "Land of the Dead", which I still consider to be the true finale to Romero's original Dead trilogy. That said, Survival is pretty solid. I enjoy the Hatfield/McCoy inspired conflict and the military guys were a pretty good audience proxy to follow. The funniest thing about the blu-ray, though, is how much of a time capsule it is. Wanna see what a pre-Walking Dead world was like? Take a look at this early promo video with Frank Darabont. Wanna see what Michael Fassbender was doing between his legendary performance in "Hunger" and his big break in Hollywood that is "X-Men: First Class"? See the trailer for a forgotten sword and sandal film called "Centurion" (which I must find and add to my collection soon). So yeah, for the money I spent to get the hard to find lenticular slipcover on eBay, this ended up being a pretty good investment. I wish Romero got one more stab at his Dead series (or was given a chance to do his version of Resident Evil back in the late 90s instead of that Paul W.S. Anderson non-horror rubbish we instead got), but as his final directorial effort, Survival of the Dead is not a bad way to go out....especially after the unwieldly mess that was "Diary of the Dead". |

nope i like it a lot myself. no issues with film. ok it's not a great as some of the others but it's at least a solid zombie film. considering much of the trash that has come out in recent years under the zombie banner it's down right great in comparison.

I like this movie a lot. Always have. I think it's miles better than Snyder's Dawn Remake and it's also better than any zombie movie that came out after it. Yep, I like Romero's zombies still the best

Anyone ever compared the video of the US and UK editions? I've got the UK one, and a lot of the night scenes seem to have terrible encoding to my eyes, so I'm curious as to whether the Magnolia US release is any better on that front.

I like this one, as well, though not as much as Diary. It's basically a Western hidden inside a zombie movie, which suggests Romero might have been resigned to a genre he had wanted to move out of a long time ago, except commercial restraints locked him in. If you take the long view of Romero's career, many of his preoccupations are here - humans being the real danger; the dead being a natural force like a plague rather than supernatural evil; a black sense of humor to lighten the atmosphere of bleak doom (the great wide shot of the now-zombified heads of the two families still fighting each other to prove who's right, against the backdrop of a full moon).
It may be lesser Romero, but the man was 69 when he made it. It's still a notable work in his filmography. He wasn't phoning it in. |
