I'm so pysched for this for a bunch of reasons:

1. Michelle Yeoh on another blu-ray.
2. Michelle Yeoh starring in another film that may actually be good.
3. John Woo is a better filmmaker in China.
4. The Film Editor is the guy who edited Ip Man and DOA (good editing!)

I'm checking my Chinatown to see if any of the stores got it off the boat early!

One of the best HK action films of 2010 in my opinion. I am definately buying this. I have heard different stories about John Woo's involvement, some say just producer others say he co-directed it.

Su himself admits that Woo was present through the entire shoot and that he often followed his suggestions. He's credited as "co-director" in English and has a "film by" credit in Chinese (but a Chinese "film by" credit isn't necessarily equivalent to an English one, as it's sometimes used for producers). He insists he didn't try to impose on Su and I think you'd have to dig fairly deep to find anything that screams "John Woo".

I mentioned before that I liked this movie because it tried to do a few things well instead of a lot of things not so well, but I think that's kind of inaccurate now. It's a small-scale film -- there's just a few locations, and I don't think there's any action sequences with more than a half-dozen or so characters -- but it feels more ambitious (and satisfying) than a lot of epics because it does seemingly everything it can within those limits. The script seems almost designed to try as many combinations of characters as possible, but (except for a twist near the very end that didn't quite click with me) it doesn't feel overdetermined -- it goes off in a number of directions, and while they don't all work (Barbie Hsu makes an impression, but her scenes got tough to watch after awhile), they're never dull unless you're absolutely dead-set on a non-stop action movie. Some of these directions would seem absolutely ridiculous if I described them here, but the movie keeps a pretty level heading throughout, so people who don't like the tonal shifts in a lot of Asian cinema won't be too discomfited.

Found this to be quite an enjoyable movie, it has its moments & a good twist. Plus it earns extra points for having Michelle Yeoh in it Easily the better film if you were trying to decide between this and Legend of Chen Zen, I think Woo's presence also helped it out as without it some might think its a bit flat. Sometimes a lack of decent camera direction can easily change a movie's tone

Just blind-bought this. Fingers crossed: hoping it doesn't turn out like Bodyguards And Assassins and Ip Man 2 where I paid $30 each for turd films.

I'd hardly call Ip Man 2 a turd film but I'd agree the story wasn't as good yet the action scenes made up for it. However Ip Man 1 had similar issues

Bodyguard & Assassins however was a big letdown, I stopped watching it 30min in

Did you at least watch the last hour?

Nope, if I can't watch the first 30min I won't bother watching the rest. Plus skipping past bits & pieces to see if it does get better doesn't make much sense to me

I'm just saying, Bodyguards and Assassins is basically split into two parts. The first hour is all drama and politics and the last hour is a full on action piece. If you could sit through Ip Man 2 because the action scenes made up for it, then you can surely do this.
