USA Madman 4K UHD (1981)

Quote:
This special limited edition embossed slipcover (designed by Tom Hodge of The Dude Designs) is limited to 6,000 units and is only available here at VinegarSyndrome.com!

Many terrifying legends are shared around campfires, but very few of them are true. That’s what teenage Richie thought about the story of Madman Marz, a hulking brute who, as the story goes, murdered his entire family decades earlier and who can be summoned from the dead by calling his name. Unfortunately for Richie and his fellow teenage summer camp counselors, the legend is very true, and Madman Marz is back, freshly sharpened axe in hand, to continue the killing spree he began many years ago…

One of the quintessential and iconic early 80s slashers, Joe Giannone’s MADMAN piles on scares, suspense, and plenty of gory kills. Starring Gaylen Ross (Dawn of the Dead) and featuring colorful photography by James Lemmo (Ms. 45), Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present the ultimate MADMAN experience on UHD for the first time, from a brand new 4K restoration of the 35mm original camera negative, and featuring hours of extra features including interviews and commentaries with nearly every surviving cast and crew member.

directed by: Joe Giannone
starring: Gaylen Ross, Tony Nunziata, Paul Ehlers, Tom Candela, Harriet Bass, Seth Jones, Jan Claire, Alex Murphy, Frederick Neumann
1981 / 88 min / 1.85:1 / English Mono

Been awhile since I've seen it, but isn't much of this movie in near-complete darkness? I know just about every film that's shot on film can benefit from 4K, in varying degrees, obviously, but this one just never struck me as an essential 4K upgrade.

At the very least, the hot-tub sequence will look glorious.

YMMV how much you like the film, but HDR can really ‘open up’ shadow detail. You get more gradations which means, if the HDR is done correctly, the detail in near blacks can look better and clearer without making the image brighter. It sounds counterproductive but it comes down to the fact the range in HDR is wider and thus you can ‘separate’ the different light levels better (from bright objects all the way to the dark ones).

Usually they ship subscriber orders first. Regular customers are generally the following week or however long it takes to ship subscriber orders.

Waiting for the same thing to add it to my list, as well as some of the other releases from this week. So far, the only one I saw active was Dracula Sucks.

Yay my 4K copy should be delivered tomorrow!

Paul Ehlers (MadMan) and Gary Sales are trying to get a sequel/reboot up and going. Paul said there are "talks going on" and he would let everyone know when he has more information!
I knew they had been trying to get funding for a while now but now they are I guess talking with potential investors maybe.

Anyone have any thoughts on the quality of this 4K? I just got mine but haven't looked yet.

Looks good. Not a major change over the already great blu ray, but it's a quality 4k. A lot of the movie is pretty low light, so the grain is heavy.

Color timing looks close to the old blu ray, which was pretty blue looking in the forests.
